Événement

MARS
Director Jeremy Pickard and Choreographer Adam H. Weinert join forces to
premiere the sixth installment in a series of ecologically inspired Planet Plays.
New York, NY  February 4, 2013  Superhero Clubhouse and Matchboxarts will present three performances of MARS (a play about mining) at Center for Performance Research (CPR) March 7-9, 2013.

The dancetheater premiere is based on the graphic novel MARS!, by Tom Coiner, and features live musical accompaniment composed by Adam Miller, along with original graphic design by Kristy Caldwell of Short Division Illustration. A developmental workshop of MARS was conducted at The Dragon's Egg in Ledyard, CT in March 2011 and culminated in a work-in-progress showing at Dixon Place in February 2012. For this
75-minute production, Javier Baca, Nathaniel Bausch-Gould, Rosie Dupont, Aba Kiser, Dan Lawrence*, Keisuke Matsuno, Manelich Minniefee, Davon Rainey, J.P. Schlegel, and Nate Weida join Mr. Miller, Mr. Pickard, and Mr. Weinert in the cross-disciplinary ensemble of actors, dancers, and musicians.

Adapted from Mr. Coiner's graphic novel, MARS is a dance-theater piece about mining in which displaced Appalachians resettled on Mars face a familiar dilemma when their leader initiates a questionable mining operation. Inspired by the history of Appalachian coal mining, MARS explores how the promise of power and the desire for justice effects environment, culture, and the mind of man. Ms. Caldwell's projected images, Mr. Miller's score, along with scenic and costume design by R. B. Schlather, compliment the collaboration between Mr. Pickard and Mr. Weinert for the project, which is made possible by the generous support of the Mertz Gilmore Foundation.

Superhero Clubhouse is a sustainable collective of artists and advocates working at the intersection of environmentalism and theater. Matchboxarts was founded in 2008 as an integrated media production house whose methods explore the intersection of public, private and personal gestures while employing a creative and technical regard to immediacy similar to that of an instant Polaroid. With collaboration at the core of both groups' process, the partnership between Superhero Clubhouse and Matchboxarts fosters the creation of allegorical mythologies, experiments in storytelling and science-inspired events, igniting environmental conversations among audience and communities in the pursuit of revolutionary theater and ecological coexistence while ensuring the content, creation and production arise organically, and produce an artifact that functions as both document and art object.

A limited number of Opening Night VIP tickets are available for $25, which include admission to an exclusive pre-show reception with core company members, a champagne toast, and reserved preferred seating. To keep the production green, paperless programming will be offered with a unique print-on-demand option available for those who purchase tickets in advance.
