BIM and the Small Firm
There is a widely shared perception that small firms and sole practitioners cannot take advantage of Building Information Modeling (BIM) due to such factors as its cost, complexity, training time, and productivity for small projects. This presentation demonstrates how BIM has enhanced their practices and enabled them to be more efficient. Participants will see firsthand the benefits of BIM and how this technology is better positioning smaller firms to compete in the evolving architecture industry.

Learning Objectives:

1. Identify the benefits of a BIM-enabled process for small firms
2. Participant will discover how a BIM projects' workflow can act as a catalyst for creating a collaborative approach to sustainable design on projects of all sizes.
3. Learn how to leverage the model for more effective communication
4. Learn how your practice can implement BIM in a way that meets your specific needs and helps you achieve your goals.

Presenter Bio:

Monte J. Chapin has over thirty years of professional design experience in the architecture and construction industry; specializing in high-end residential, multi-family, mixed-use and commercial/retail projects.

He integrated Graphisoft ArchiCAD into professional practice in 1991. Nearly 20 years later, he is continually expanding the potential of BIM - Building Information Modeling - using Graphisoft's renowned Virtual Building solution, ArchiCAD.

Currently, as Business Process Leader at Graphisoft North America, he is engaging new processes of collaborating, coordinating and communicating information and data contained in the 3D geometry of Virtual Building through interoperability initiatives and exchanges of BIM data using IFC (Industry Foundation Classes).

Since 2001, he has been mentoring and teaching ArchiCAD and Virtual Building - providing architects, designers, engineers and builders with knowledge and solutions necessary to leverage the new paradigm of BIM technology.

Monte joined Graphisoft North America in 2008 to advance the concepts of innovative new processes and workflow using ArchiCAD for design, construction and operations; modeling, simulating and analyzing building performance as integrated systems thinking. He is fostering and promoting a shared vision of new mental models and team learning as AEC companies revise business strategies to integrate BIM technologies and processes into their organizations.
