In rural South Carolina, 1948, fifteen-year-old Alice looks forward to graduating from high school (a family first) and attending college on the scholarship she has earned. But her plans are devastated when she learns that she must honor her parent's secret marriage arrangements for her to Luthern Tucker the lonely, old family benefactor who had been eyeing her since she was seven-years-old. Alice's next twenty years of overcoming trials are a tribute to the power of nurturing and healing that can cause a broken spirit to be reborn.
Because the tradition of arranged nuptials continues, The Resurrection of Alice has a contemporary, universal social appeal to anyone seeking to understand how and why this tradition remains as well as some possible emotional, psychological and physical tolls that may plague both the betrothed and their families, if the union is not a happy one.
The Resurrection has an educational appeal as well, not only for the theme's historical basis, but because the story is also heavily peppered with other informative references, from events that forged the course of the future to trivia. What was the tallest building before the Empire State Building? Who invented the traffic light? Who invented the blood bank? Who was the first American woman to receive an international aviators license? What was the 1968 South Carolina State University massacre? How did U.S. President Garfield die? These questions, and many more, are answered in "The Resurrection". More philosophical questions and situations with no easy or exact answers are also posed to promote thought and dialogue.

About the Artist
Perri Gaffney (Actress, Author, Playwright "The Resurrection of Alice") A Helen Hayes Award nominated actress, Perri Gaffney was last seen performing in the Washington, DC region in Arena Stage's world premiere production, Polk County, by Zora Neal Hurston and Dorothy Wearing, for which she was nominated as best supporting actress for her work in the role of Dicie Long. A resident of New York, NY, she last performed The Resurrection of Alice, adapted from her novel of the same title, off-Broadway at the Billie Holiday Theatre. Prior to that performance she performed the show at Main Stage West in northern California. Most recently, she was seen Off-Broadway in The Waiting Room by Samm-Art Williams, and a revival of Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest. Other stage credits include: Macbeth, Music Man and Death and the King's Horseman at Oregon Shakespeare Festival (OSF), The Resurrection of Alice (Southern Illinois University, Carbondale Campus, National Black Theatre Festival (NBTF 2009), Oregon Stage Works), To Kill A Mockingbird (VA Stage), Intimate Apparel (Atlanta, The Cleveland Playhouse, OSF), Polk County (at McCarter Theater, Berkeley Rep, So Close (NYC), Fences (Weston Playhouse), Bee-Luther-Hatchee (St. Louis Rep., as well as The Blue Heron NYC) and A Raisin in the Sun (Geva Theatre). A recipient of several poetry commissions, she's performed her monodrama, JOSEPHINE, (based on the life of Josephine Baker) at Lincoln Center, throughout the NYC library system, in Sarasota, Florida and Winston-Salem, NC. She recently partnered with award-winning filmmaker Dwight Smith to create innovative and thought provoking films and documentaries. On television she played Nurse Bentley on As The World Turns, and has appeared on NBC's Law & Order and Law & Order: SVU. Film credits include: So Close (independent feature), Paving the Way (feature-length documentary she narrated and co-produced), Deep Trouble, Fake Preacher and Cops, Crooks and Banana Cream Pies. Other writing credits include: How To Manage Artists In Pop Music, a textbook she co-authored with Mitch Weiss (Allworth Press); numerous articles in
ROUTES, Black Masks, and African Eye magazine.
Women's Works Program
The Women's Works Program is created to celebrate, investigate, and cultivate the work for, by, and about women. As a means of reaching its target demographic, women aged 25 thru 65, the Theatre endeavors to present one of its productions each year that is solely dedicated to women's issues; totally staffed by women. It is a priority for the company to reach out to women of all socio-economic backgrounds through this program as it celebrates the triumphs and travails of women around the world.
The Essential Theatre
The Essential Theatre is a non profit professional theatre dedicated, but not limited to producing theatre reflective of the African-American experience from a first person perspective that celebrates and explores the rich, diverse American cultural landscape. Paramount in the company's mission is the implementation of programs for youth in the Washington, DC metropolitan area that promotes interdisciplinary education and positive levels of self esteem.
