An Evening in Arlington - Folk & Jazz
"An Evening in Arlington" is the premier concert in a new semi-annual concert series that will draw from the pool of well-known, talented, professional musicians in Arlington and surrounding communities.

About the performers:

DON HEMWALL TRIO

Berklee-trained jazz pianist Don Hemwall is well known for playing solo and in his eponymous Trio and Quartet at several long-standing club and hotel house gigs around New England.

Fans regularly return to hear Don with the Pocket Big Band, a 10-piece ensemble; Dameronia, a five piece jazz group; and with his Trio and Quartet - in fact, in any conceivable arrangement of musicians playing almost anywhere in the world! Don Hemwall is a frequent pianist with the Barbara Duffy Dance Co. and is scheduled to tour nationally with them.

St. John's Episcopal Church parishioners are accustomed to hearing the Don Hemwall Quartet play three or four selections at services now they'll enjoy hearing the group play an extended set at this event. Musicians joining the Don Hemwall Trio for this event include local favorites James Nicoloro and John Dougherty.

LIZ BUCHANAN & GORDON MCFARLAND

Liz Buchanan & Gordon MacFarland made their debut as a folk-singing duo not long after they met almost eight years ago. Listeners often remark on their harmonic blend and their upbeat selection of original and well-known songs.  Liz is also known in Arlington and beyond for her singing and creative arts programs for children and families, and her award-winning family-music CDs, on which Gordon has been featured. Liz's newest children's CD, "Once Upon A Tune," is being released in April 2013!

"This dynamic duo writes and sings about many facets of life: love, kids and the environment. Their close harmonies and fine guitar work are sure to captivate. . . Gordon's unique guitar style adds an extra dimension to the music. Always fine listening to this duo!" - Lincoln Open Mike host Rich Eilbert

DIANE TARAZ, singer-songwriter

"Diane Taraz is a charming, homestyle folk singer who delivers ancient ballads and reflective modern songs with pleasing grace. Her lovely soprano has a deep shimmer and calm, honest phrasing. . ." -- Scott Alarik, The Boston Globe

Diane Taraz's songs draw much inspiration from traditional folk. "Raisin Pie," based on a family memory, is a haunting tribute to the power of music to ease the trials of everyday life. "Gathered Safely In" is an instant classic, made for singing along. "Normandy" and "Amaryllis," performed with voice alone, are gorgeous traditional melodies for which Diane wrote new words.

Her song "Walk Away" has been used as a theme song for fundraising walks in the fight against domestic violence. Sing Out! magazine published "Walk Away" in 1994, calling it "one of the best."

Many of Diane's songs celebrate weird and wonderful events of the past. "The Sea-Serpent of Cape Ann" tells the story of that mythical New England beastie. "Les Filles du Roi" looks back at her great-great-great-great-great-great-great grandmother's leap into the unknown as one of the young women who sailed to New France in the 1600s to marry the settlers in Quebec. In "The Ballad of Deborah Samson" she recounts the true story of a Massachusetts woman who served in the Revolutionary War disguised as a man.
