Female Voices in Israeli Cinema - with Director Udi Ben Seadia
Each film deals with the female characters struggles for equal rights and all films eventually realize the heroine's desires. The first film features a traditional Sephardi community in Jerusalem, the second film features young Arab women in Israel and their struggle within a patriarchal society, and the third film is set within the Israeli army and its supposedly liberal environment.
Israeli cinema continues to develop and provide a stage for people and women whose voices have not been heard before. In the course of the lecture we will discuss the creation of 3 talented and creative women who have recently penetrated the heart of Israeli filmmaking. Among other things, we will see excerpts from the films of: Elite Zexer (Sandstorm), which deals with the place of women in the Bedouin sector; Maysaloun Hamoud (Not here not there) that deals with young Arab women who are competing for their place in Israeli Arab society; and, Talia Lavi whose wonderful film Zero Motivation deals with the place of women in the Israeli army.
All the films deal with the womens attempt to formulate a new identity for themselves, and the possible price they are sometimes forced to pay for this struggle. In all the films, the talent and the momentum in which they were made are very prominent.
Udi Ben Seadia graduated from the University of Tel-Aviv, has published satirical columns and short stories in several Israeli and American newspapers and journals. Udi has served as the chair of the Director's Association in Israel and currently has two one-act plays in production.
