A Century of Cuban Music in NYC with Trio La Cumbancha
Benjamin Lapidus Trio featuring Manuel Carro and Julian Chang

In Cuba, the word cumbancha means party and Trio La Cumbancha brings together three of New York Citys most exciting instrumentalists and singers dedicated to performing the entire range of the Cuban songbook. Manuel Alejandro Carro (Camagüey, Cuba), Julian Chang (La Habana, Cuba), and Benjamin Lapidus (NYC) have performed throughout the world in a number of renowned groups, recordings, and concerts since the 1990s. For this show, the group will perform well known songs by Miguel Matamoros, Ignacio Piñeiro, and other composers whos music is still relevant and exciting today.
Carro and Lapidus are active in jazz and Latin dance music and were both featured performers on the Grammy™-nominated recording Entre Colegas (2015) by Latin jazz icon Andy González. Carro who often performs as MannyÁ is an accomplished percussionist and vocalist at home with both current Latin pop genres and traditional repertoire. A master of the Cuban tres and guitar, Lapidus has performed and/or recorded throughout the world with a whos who of musicians including everyone from The Buena Vista Social Club to jazz legend Joe McPhee. He has released 8 albums as a bandleader and has participated in roughly 50 commercial recordings as a sideman. Chang is an in-demand musician well known for his incredible guitar playing and vocals, often sounding like three people at once and winning fans everywhere he performs.

Julian Chang Acosta is a brilliant Cuban guitarist and vocalist from Las Villas province who has made his home in New Jersey for the last three decades. He is known among musicians for his mastery of Cuban genres such as the trova, son, and bolero. Cuban music fans throughout the New York Metropolitan area know Chang because he works consistently with world-class performers such as Grammy™-nominee David Oquendo and many others who use him as a first-call musician.
Camaguey, Cuba native, Manuel Alejandro Carro, arrived in the US in the 2000s. He has performed and recorded internationally with Albita Rodríguez, Orquesta Salsa Con Conciencia, Alex Fox, and many others. Manuel excels at all percussion instruments and earned his Music Education degree at Kean College. He has also recorded a number of pop singles and music videos as MannyÁ. He is a Grammy™-nominated musician whose singing and playing was featured on Andy Gonzálezs Entre Colegas (2015), which was nominated for Best Latin jazz album.
Benjamin Lapidus is a scholar, educator, composer, arranger, and Grammy™- nominated musician who has performed and/or recorded Cuban tres, Puerto Rican cuatro, guitar, and voice on film soundtracks, video games, television commercials, and albums with some of the most notable musicians in Latin music and jazz. He wrote the liner notes, sang, composed, and played both tres and guitar on Andy González's Entre Colegas (2015), which was nominated for Best Latin jazz album. In 2015, he also received the Chico O'Farril Lifetime Achievement Award from Latinjazz USA for his contributions to Afrocuban music. In 2013, he won a fellowship from the National Endowment for the Humanities for his research on Latin music in NYC from 1940-1990 to be published by University of Mississipi Press.

Seating at Pangea is communal. Other guests may be seated at the table. There is a $20 per person food or beverage minimum at the tables. DINNER SEATING BEGINS AT 6:00PM.
The house opens one hour before the show. Please arrive early.
Late arrivals will be seated at management's discretion.
