Hunchback of Notre Dame
Set in 15th Century France, this version of The Hunchback of Notre Dame is pulled directly from the text of the classic tale by Victor Hugo. Our story is told by three Gargoyles who perch high on the wall of the famed Cathedral. They tell us the sad tale of Quasimodo who was left on the doorstep of the mighty church when he was just a baby. Taken in by a young priest, Claude Frollo, he grew up to become the bellringer, calling the faithful to mass and making the churches mighty bells sing each day. After year of seclusion Quasimodo decides to venture out into the world below the Cathedral. The day he chooses is special, the Feast of Fools and being the ugliest guest of the grand festival he is crowded King of Fools. His procession is soon distracted, however, by the graceful dancing of the Gypsy girl, Esmeralda. Her dancing entices everyone, including the now Arch Deacon, Claude Frollo. Unable to cope with his...baser desires, Frollo accuses her a witch. She escapes the guards, but Frollo was cleaver and decided to send his faithful Hunchback to seize the girl. When this plan goes wrong Quasimodo is taken by the Captain of the Guard, Phoebus and put on trail. He is whipped, publicly, in the Square de Greve, and the only soul who shows him any kindness is Esmeralda. Phoebus and Esmeralda soon kindle a romance, but all that is dashed away when Frollo slips up on the would-be couple, stabs the Captain and blames the young girl. She is to be executed for Murder, but before the hangman can do his work she is rescued by Quasimodo who whisks her away to Notre Dame for safe keeping. At this point in our story Claude Frollo is desperate and turns his attention to Esmeraldas 'husband of ill circumstance', Pierre Gringoire and enlists him in a plot to take the girl from the Hunchback, meanwhile the court of Gypsies takes it upon themselves to rescue the girl as well as rob the Cathedral of any valuables. A bloody battle ensues in which the monster inside Quasimodo can't help but be brought to the surface. All things come to a head in the Square de Greve where many an ill fate are met by our cast of characters. Our story ends as it begins, with our Gargoyles finishing this sad tale.
