Altered Books Workshop with Lou Cabeen
In this workshop, participants will learn basic techniques for altering a book to use as a journal or sketchbook. These techniques include editing the content of a used book via cutting, pasting, gesso, and collage. Methods of creating pockets and cavities in the existing book structure will be demonstrated and discussed. These edited and altered books can then become a repository for personal experience via journal writing and collage. We will look at examples, discuss the nature and use of a journal that combines writing and collage, and create small collages on our newly altered book pages using the daily debris that fills (and quietly informs) our lives.

Lou Cabeen is a Seattle artist who works with a range of media including maps, textiles, stitching and collage, all of which inform her work in bookarts. Making artist books allows her to fully explore the power of tactile experience in communicating her ideas. She uses cloth, paper and stitching in order to emphasize the tactile nature of private experience, and to reveal the textures of subjective thought. Making altered books to use as journals and sketchbooks has been a private practice for many years, and a standard assignment in her University of Washington fiber and book arts classes. Her approach emphasizes the value of daily debris, the empowerment that comes from taking the discarded ephemera of our lives and using it to give shape, form, and meaning to our personal life.

You can view Lou's work in the current artist's book exhibition, Chapter 12: Taking Issue, in the Sherry Grover Gallery at BIMA through February 4, 2018.

Saturday December 9, 2017  |  10am-4pm  |  BIMA Classroom  |  All materials provided. We will have a selection of books to choose from, but you are encouraged to bring a used hardbound book on a subject of interest to you as well.
