Protest, Policy and Dismantling the Prison Industrial Complex An Evening with Baltimore Community Leader, Dayvon Love
Dayvon Love is a Baltimore-based political organizer and  Director of Public Policy for Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle, a grassroots think tank that advances the public policy interests of Black people. Since 2010, Dayvon and LBS have led many successful organizing and legislative efforts:

pressured the state of Maryland to disband its plans to build a juvenile jail in East Baltimore for youth charged with adult crimes
supported the passage of Christophers law in 2014 which requires police officers to be trained in CPR, cultural sensitivity, the proper use of force and interacting with the physically and mentally disabled (in response to the 2012 choke-hold killing of Christopher Brown by Baltimore County police) and
most recently successfully fighting the bail bond industry to get bail reform in Maryland.

Dayvon is also featured in an HBO documentary "Baltimore Rising which will air in Nov 2018.

Dayvon will be talking about lessons learned in both their jail and bail reform fights in Maryland and sharing stories from  his book of essays, "The Black Book: Reflections from the Baltimore Grassroots."

All money raised this evening will support Leaders of a Beautiful Struggle and the local Black-led organization Initiate Justice which is working both inside and outside prisons to write, pass and implement CA state ballot initiatives to dismantle the prison industrial complex.

Taina Vargas-Edmonds from Initiate Justice will talk about their current campaign, the Voting Restoration and Democracy Act, which they hope to get on to the November 2018 ballot. This initiative would restore voting rights to those incarcerated and on parole.
