Salón México (Mexico, 1949)

This was Emilio Fernándezs first entry into the películas de cabareteras (dance hall film), a specifically Mexican film genre, involving working-class women forced to work as prostitutes. Mercedes works at a large dance hall while secretly putting her kid sister through school until she commits a desperatebut justifiablecrime that leads to tragedy.

One of Mexicos most famous cabaret films begins in high gear and never relents. A young prostitute, Violeta, saves a discarded baby from a garbage can beginning a monumental struggle between herself and a pimp.
