The Shrill Collective presents: The Feigned Courtesans
Rome, 1679: Three virtuous young noblewomen seek to take their fates into their own hands. The sisters Marcella and Cornelia are bound for a loveless arranged marriage and the convent, respectively. However, they are determined to end up with their beloved English cavaliers, Fillamour and Galliard. Laura Lucretia is contracted to marry their brother Julio, but she happens to be in love with Cornelias beau. Disguising themselves as courtesans, all three find power and freedom to wield their sexuality-- though not without some classic cases of mistaken identity, intrigue, and farce. Aphra Behns brilliant battle of the sexes confronts love, lust, and the perils of the patriarchy, and rings every bit as biting and relevant today as it did over three centuries ago.
