Eric Miller and Max Yount
Eric Miller (viola da gamba) and Max Yount (harpsichord) present J.S. Bach - The sonatas for Viola da gamba and Harpsichord, BWV 1027-1029, on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 3:00pm. J.S. Bach's three sonatas for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord, likely composed in the late 1730's or early 1740's, are cornerstones of the baroque viol repertoire. These masterpieces not only look back to the great tradition of viol playing which came before, but propel the instrument to its late flourishing in the pre-classical era associated with composers such as Carl F. Abel and J.S. Bach's own son, Carl Phillip Emanuel who wrote three virtuosic sonatas of his own for the instrument. The movements in these wildly diverse sonatas by J.S. Bach range from conversational to spooky, peaceful to bombastic, and finally take a majestic turn in the last and perhaps greatest of the set, the sonata in G Minor, BWV 1029. Having performed all three of these works over the years on various concerts, this is the first time gambist Eric Miller and harpsichordist Max Yount together will have performed the complete set in one program.
Bios:
Eric Miller performs as a viola da gambist, cellist, chamber musician, and session cellist around the Midwest. A specialist in repertoire from the 17th and 18th centuries, Eric is an active viola da gamba soloist and member of the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble. He also performs frequently with Indie Folk artist Katie Burns with whom he has recorded four albums. This year, with a loan of instruments from the Viola da Gamba Society of America, Eric is piloting a new chamber ensemble for high school students, the Madison Youth Viol Consort, which will focus on polyphonic music written for viols during the renaissance. In the fall, Eric will be making his first recording of unaccompanied music for the viol in Madison. Largely and proudly self-taught on the viol, Eric has recently participated in Josh Lee's Free Viola da Gamba Residency and has received great wisdom and encouragement in short bursts during sessions with many of the nation's finest players over the years. As a classically trained cellist, Eric holds degrees from Northern Illinois University and UW-Madison where he trained with two consummate chamber musicians, Marc Johnson and Parry Karp, respectively. A dedicated educator trained in the Suzuki approach, Eric teaches a large cello studio in Madison and has also served hundreds of students as orchestra teacher for the Madison Metropolitan School District since 2009. www.millerstrings.com
Max Yount, organist, harpsichordist and composer, is Emeritus Professor and former Chair of the Department of Music at Beloit College where he taught music history and theory of all levels; he still teaches organ, harpsichord and composition at the college. As past Dean of the American Guild of organists, Madison chapter, and past President of the Midwestern Historical Keyboard Society (MHKS), he has presented many recitals and papers at meetings of the latter and at the American Musicological Society, Midwest Chapter. He has made several concert tours of Germany as organist and harpsichordist. Yount is Director of Music and organist of First Congregational Church in Beloit, where he organizes a concert series, MUSICA MAXIMA, which presents international and local artists. He serves as the harpsichordist of the Wisconsin Baroque Ensemble. With B. Mus. From Oberlin College and M. M., and D.M. A. from Eastman School of Music, he has studied organ with Fenner Douglass and David Craighead, harpsichord with Isolde Ahlgrimm and Louis Bagger, and composition with Louis Mennini.
