ASME STS - Thursday, October 19, 2017 - "A Novel Upper-Limb Exoskeleton for Stroke Patients"
SPEAKER - Rana Soltani-Zarrin

BRIEF SYNOPSIS:

Upper-limb robotic based rehabilitation devices can assist elderly and facilitate recovery of individuals with impaired motor control such as stroke patients. With an aging population that continues to grow and the increasing number of stroke patients, there is a need for such robotic-based devices. Despite the advances in the area of development of these devices and the many advantages robotic based devices can offer in improving the recovery of stroke patients, rarely the developed devices end up in hospitals and homes. With the ultimate goal of providing home-based therapy, we have developed a novel ergonomic lightweight 8 degrees of freedom (DoF) upper-limb exoskeleton, called CLEVERarm (Compact, Low-weight, Ergonomic, Virtual/Augmented Reality Enhanced Rehabilitation), capable of complying with the human user. While the novel inner shoulder design of the exoskeleton allows for accurate alignment between anatomical and device joints, the innovative path generation method allows for producing human-like motions considering the complex movements of shoulder joint center during arm motions. Moreover, learning and intention detection capabilities of CLEVERarm allow improved human-robot interaction, producing patient specific trainings and assistance which adapt to patients progress. Furthermore, by enhancing the developed device with augmented and virtual reality technologies, the desired therapeutic trainings are developed in virtual and augmented reality environments to allow for entertaining trainings and potential virtual group-therapies.

SPEAKER'S BIOGRAPHY:

Rana Soltani-Zarrin is a PhD candidate in department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University working under supervision of Dr. Reza Langari. She has a bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering, and a master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Central Florida under supervision of Dr. Suhada Jayasuriya. She was on the technical program committee of ASME's 2014 Dynamic Systems and Control Conference (DSCC) and 2017 Region C Society of Women Engineers(SWE) Conference. She has served as a session chair at 2014 DSCC and is now the Co-Chair at the GradSWE organization at Texas A&M University. She has published 10 conference and Journal papers, and is a reviewer of European Journal of Control, Elsevier Journal of Robotics and Autonomous Systems, and IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering. She has been awarded multiple awards and scholarships such as the Fran O'Sullivan Women in Lenovo Leadership Scholarship, and the Ethel Ashworth-Tsutsui Memorial Award for Mentoring. Her research in the area of developing rehabilitation robots has received significant media coverage. The research has also been selected to be presented at renowned conferences and events such as the 15th IEEE International Conference on Rehabilitation Robotics( ICORR), 2017 Robotics Science and Systems (RSS), 2017 Global Grand Challenge Summit sponsored by the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, and the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

Professional Development Hour (PDH) certificates will be available to participants at the conclusion of the event.
