That Magnificent Mozart! ..with the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra
Everett First Presbyterian Church

Join the Everett Philharmonic Orchestra for a delightful afternoon of Mozart on Sunday, February 11, 2018 from 3-5 PM in the ideal chamber music setting of Everett's First Presbyterian Church.

Our Magnificent Mozart concert features two pieces from early in the composers career and one later work.

Mozart was busily writing The "Magic Flute" (the last opera he would ever complete) when he was made an offer he couldn't refuse: a new opera was needed for a royal ceremony in Prague, and a substantial fee could be had if the piece were ready in 18 days! Abandoning "Flute", Mozart switched gears, wrote "La Clemenza di Tito" K.621, met his deadline, and got his fee. The Overture is festive yet dignified, recognizing both that the story was about Roman Emperor Titus and that there would be real live royalty in the audience. The gentler second theme might be a musical depiction of the kindness of the benevolent monarch referred to in the title.

Years earlier, Baron Thaddeus von Durnitz, an amateur bassoonist with a well-filled purse, commissioned the 18-year-old Mozart to write several pieces for bassoon solo. One of these is the fresh and delightful "Bassoon Concerto in B flat Major, K. 191". Throughout his career, Mozart was notable for his skilled and sympathetic handling of wind instruments, and this concerto certainly is proof of that. The gentle second movement features a melody that the composer would later recycle and transform into one of his most famous operatic arias, "Porgi Amor" from The Marriage of Figaro.

At age 22, young man Mozart made a visit to Paris, testing the waters, trying to land an interesting and well-paying job. The visit was a failure, and he eventually returned home unemployed and discouraged.  However, he was able to get some of his music performed, including the grand Paris Symphony No. 31 in D Major, K.297". French audiences of the day had very specific expectations as to how a symphony should go. They would listen carefully and even applaud after a passage that particularly pleased them (much as we do today while listening to jazz or bluegrass). Apparently, the first and last movements met expectations and were applauded, but the slow movement was received in silence. At the time it was judged a failure. More than two hundred years later, though, we beg to differ!

Join us in the wonderful acoustics of Everett's First Presbyterian Church as we present Mozart's bid to Wow the French crowd.

Your concert experience will continue with an opportunity to meet the musicians at a reception in the adjoining social hall..complete with cookies!
