Seattle, WA - Duwamish territory hosts the Turtle Island premiere of NALÅLA (Give Life) an interdisciplinary/transcultural concert by Infinite Dakota and I Moving Lab takes place for one-night only at Velocity Dance Centers Founders Studio on Friday August 11th (7-9PM).

After years of creative globe trotting to transform into an internationally respected indigenous hip hop artist and contemporary performance maker, Dåkot-ta Alcantara-Camacho weaves these experiences into a sonic and visual tribute to ancestral lineages coming from Guåhan, Låguas, Gåni and Vigan, Illokos Sur into a full length album, NALÅLA.

Born in Snohomish Territory (Everett, WA) and raised in Tscha-kole-chy (Whidbey Island, WA), NALÅLA (Give Life) promises to be a unique homecoming for the Seattle grown artist, and is the first opportunity  share their breakthrough musical album release with local artists, friends and family who are credited as the support network that inspired the vision.I was in Piha, a beautiful small seaside village in Aotearoa during the Matao New Year in February 2017 when I released the album. To bring the work back to my roots with the radicial movement, organizers and artists of Seattle connects to the deeper meanings and stories of shaped experiences that I feel these songs, spoken word pieces and raps enliven.

Created in many iterations, scribbled notes, on planes, buses, trains, in cities as far apart as Madison, WI, Brooklyn, NY, Auckland, NZ for example, the work features collaborations with different beats, lyrics, vocals, chants, rhythms, languages that recall life changing experiences and epiphanies in forests, on mountains, in waterfalls that sparked revelations of hidden ancestral memories.

Graduating with a Masters in Performance Studies Degree from NYUs Tisch School of the Arts in 2015, Alcantara-Camachos work has long questioned how performance holds a key towards expanding universal world views that acknowledge the importance and complexities of identity, belonging and displacement. I felt like I was kicked out of a class for being indigenous when I was provoked with surprising statements like why dont you do your ceremony back on your reservation?

Heading back to their ancestral homelands to learn an almost unspoken indigenous language Fino Håya also provided little healing salve, as Alcantara-Camacho found their community identified more with the name Chamorro (which the Spanish conquesters had given) rather than Matao (which in fino håya means to have peopled referring to the ones who populated the islands first) and locals are encouraged by the Guam Visitors Bureau to perpetuate the name as Guam (a mispronunciation of the fino håya name Guåhan).

NALÅLA (Give Life) is as much a revitalisation of hopes and dreams as much as it recognises the political turmoil of being an unincorporated territory of the United States. Though the island is in the midst of an independence movement, Alcantara-Camacho says "there are unlimited possibilities of creating freedom through self expression and reclamation of our human connection to the planet".

I hope the evening demonstrates the eclectic perspectives we can all share, through indigeneity, including traditional chant, contemporary dance, video installation, electronic soundscore and hip hop songs, says Alcantara-Camacho.

The concert culminates a series of activations throughout the week, called I LAND (in) DUWAMISH - curated by Alcantara-Camacho and I MOVING LAB co-founder Jack Gray from Aotearoa/New Zealand.  It officially starts on Monday August 7th with EXIST (in) CIRCLE an I LAND opening event at the Wing Luke Museum (6-8pm), Tuesday August 8th with THEY TALK a panel of queer indigenous creativity at Hirabayashi Place. This is followed by I MOVE (3 days of morning drop in class and afternoon lab intensives) from Wednesday August 9th - Friday August 11th at Velocity Dance Center.

NALÅLA has pre-sale tickets available online (min $10) door-sales (min $15). Sliding Scale tickets create class conscious decisions to support indigenous creativity).
