Yankl Falk Trio
YANKL FALK TRIO featuring Christina Crowder and Charles Casimiro

Jack Yankl Falk (clarinet/vocals) joins with Christina Crowder (accordion) and Charles Casimiro (bass) for an evening of Carpathian klezmer, Hasidic chant, Hungarian and Moldavian dance tunes, and raucous Yiddish drinking songs. As a bonus, Yankl will share liturgical invocations to guard against the dangerous weirdness that has enveloped us of late.

Yankl Falk and Christina Crowder first played together in the mid-1990s as members of Di Naye Kapelye, Hungary's Jewish roots ensemble. Touring extensively throughout Europe, they have performed at festivals in Krakow, Munich, Prague, Antwerp, Nantes (France), among others. Their CDs with Di Naye Kapelye have been praised for their energetic interpretation of Carpathian Jewish music, drawn from the groups extensive research with vanishing Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe.

Since launching a Sunday morning Yiddish radio hour in 1979, Yankl Falk has been at the center of Yiddish culture in Portland. Yankl was first introduced to Yiddish song and cantorial music by his grandfather, an Austrian (Galitsyaner) immigrant.

Yankl sings with Don Byrons acclaimed Music of Mickey Katz ensemble and has recorded with Polka Madre (Mexico City), Di Fidl-Kapelye (Amsterdam), Yale Strom (San Diego), and the Black Cat Orchestra (Seattle). Locally, Yankl has worked with Klezmocracy/DoinaGroove, Hora Tzigane, and Oomph Intercontinental. In 2013, Yankl was profiled by the New York Times for his 30 years as an itinerant High Holidays cantor, including several years at the US Naval Academy (Anchors Oy Vey).

Yankls singing...returns us to a time when the power of the voice could tell a story and move an audience. (Ari Davidow, Klezmer Shack)

His clarinet stylings astonish the ear with a hurricane of shrieking, bleating proclamations and counter-assertions. His melodic interpretations threaten to careen off the tracks, but somehow he gets you to the end of the tune intact, if breathless. (Lev Liberman, The Klezmorim)

Lake Oswego native Christina Crowder lived for ten years in Hungary and Romania, including two years as a Fulbright scholar, recording elderly Romanian violinists who had played for Jewish communities before World War II. Her recent research, sponsored by NYU Abu Dhabi, investigates connections between Jewish, Bessarabian, and Greek music.

Now based in Connecticut, Christina is a highly sought accordionist in New York klezmer circles, performing regularly with leading klezmorim including Margot Leverett, Alicia Svigals, and Walter Zev Feldman. She performs with the Nu Haven Kapelye and leads the chamber klezmer trio Bivolia (bee-vo-lee-tsa). She also performs with the Alexander Fiterstein Trio, the Wholesale Klezmer Band, and the Dave Levitt Klezmer Trio. She has been a guest instructor in klezmer accordion and ensemble performance in Paris, New York, Albuquerque, Duluth, and Asheville.
