Come On ~ a My House Celebrating the Music of Mr. Nat King Cole & Rosemary Clooney

Nathaniel Adams Coles was born on March 17, 1919, known professionally as Nat King Cole, was a musician who first came to prominence as a leading jazz pianist. He owes most of his popular musical fame to his soft baritone voice, which he used to perform in big band and jazz genres. Cole's first mainstream vocal hit was his 1943 recording of one of his compositions, "Straighten Up and Fly Right", based on a black folk tale that his father had used as a theme for a sermon. Johnny Mercer invited him to record it for his fledgling Capitol Records label. It sold over 500,000 copies, proving that folk-based material could appeal to a wide audience. Although Cole would never be considered a rocker, the song can be seen as anticipating the first rock and roll records. Indeed, Bo Diddley, who performed similar transformations of folk material, counted Cole as an influence. He was one of the first black Americans to host a television variety show, and has maintained worldwide popularity since his death.

Rosemary Clooney born on May 23, 1928 was an American singer and actress. She came to prominence in the early 1950s with the novelty hit "Come On-a My House" written by William Saroyan and his cousin Ross Bagdasarian (better known as David Seville, the father figure of Alvin and the Chipmunks), which was followed by other pop numbers such as "Botch-a-Me" (a cover version of the Italian song Ba-Ba-Baciami Piccina by Alberto Rabagliati), "Mambo Italiano", "Tenderly", "Half as Much", "Hey There" and "This Ole House", although she had success as a jazz vocalist. Clooney's career languished in the 1960s, partly due to problems related to depression and drug addiction, but revived in 1977, when her White Christmas co-star Bing Crosby asked her to appear with him at a show marking his 50th anniversary in show business. She continued recording until her death in 2002.

Tony Bennett said of Rosemary Clooney, "She was one of America's finest pop vocalists, with a clear, pure voice filled with warmth and sincerity"

Of Nat King Cole, Isaac Hayes said, "He was cool before it was cool to be cool."

This special evening of homage will be performed by Boston's finest musicians and actors, including Leigh Barrett, Brian DeLorenzo, Hildy Grossman & Scott Wahle.
