The 4th Mission presents First Annual Park Slope Messiah Sing-Along
The 4th Mission of Old First Reformed Church, in partnership with the Brooklyn Community Chorus, the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, and Congregation Beth Elohim is pleased to present the "First Annual Park Slope Messiah Sing-Along", which promises to be a spectacular holiday musical event bringing a diverse community together in an interfaith celebration. All proceeds for the event benefit the Old First Ceiling Restoration Fund.

Established in 1654, as one of the oldest congregations in New York City, Old First Reformed Church has a long history of hosting local arts events and holiday-time celebrations.

Comments Rev. Dr. Daniel Meeter, "I grew up singing Messiah choruses with my family in front of the stereo in the living room. We had a couple [of] scores and looked on together, my brother and I aspiring to equal my dad's strong tenor. I love to sing the Messiah even more than to hear it. So I thought, why not here? I've been wishing for this for years, and now we've got the right mix of leaders to get it going. It's a dream come true. "

Featured performers and soloists are to include Aleeza Meir (continuo and artistic director), Josh Breitzer (tenor), Donna Breitzer (soprano), Jeff Mandelbaum (counter-tenor), Jeff Spurgeon (baritone), and Nancy Ranger (oboist), in addition to instrumentalists from the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, among many other accomplished artists who will be donating their talents to the event.

The 4th Mission is a project of Old First Reformed Church that advances the church's mission to provide community outreach, predominantly through hospitality to the arts.

Old First Ceiling Restoration Fund is the effort to restore the ceiling of Old First's sanctuary so that it may once again provide a community meeting place and spiritual home to those who seek it. In September, 2011, just fifteen minutes before Rosh Hashanah services, large chunks of plaster began to fall from the ceiling at Old First Reformed Church. The plaster nearly hit Rabbi Andy Bachman in the head, prompting a sinking sense of déjà vu. Bachman and his Jewish congregation were gathered in a Protestant church because the ceiling of their own synagogue, Beth Elohim had begun to collapse two years before. With the Old First sanctuary unsafe and out of use until its ceiling can be restored--now Beth Elohim returns the favor as it hosts the "Messiah Sing-Along" in its renovated synagogue.

Our performers will be using the Watkins Shaw edition, published by Novello. We recommend the following:

1. Bring your own copy of the score if you have it (doesn't have to be the Watkins Shaw edition)
2. Purchase a copy in advance for $10 on Amazon.com

A limited number of scores will be available for purchase at the event.
