Managing Fracture Complexity through Energy Conservation and Stress Shadow Interactions using Continuous-Pumping Completion Systems

Abstract:
Pressure in excess of the minimum principal stress that is required to propagate a fracture is relatively small.  Furthermore, the amount of inelastic strain that hydraulic stimulation can cause is directly related to the rate of stress application.  Understanding that the in-situ stress field has only been exceeded by a small amount makes it apparent that energy loss through relaxation and redistribution can impact SRV. By applying the concept of stress shadow interactions to the volume of rock that is subject to them we see the formation will continue to undergo inelastic deformation that is inversely proportional to the net pressure decline. This observation then directly relates SRV to the efficiency of a fracture stimulation operation and dictates the ability to generate fracture surface area in the main hydraulic fracture wings, along natural fractures and in the surrounding rocks.  New observations of the geomechanical impacts of operational timing that is inherent to different completion systems are evaluated and methods to better predict stimulated reservoir volume are identified.

Bio:
Neil Peterson is a geoscientist with 17 years of experience in the Oil and Gas industry.  Professional disciplines include Geology, Geophysics, Geomechanics and Petrophysics.  His work has focused on developing methods of petrophysical and geomechanical analysis in unconventional resources.  He is the inventor of the workflow that uses reflected shear wave measurements to identify fractures, determine well placement in the target formation and design well completions based on those observations.  He is also the first person to have used analysis of TOC measurements from NMR and Geochemical logs to differentiate solid kerogen from liquid hydrocarbon for source rock/reservoir characterization and bypassed pay identification.
