How Rate Transient Analysis and Integrated Reservoir Studies Have Revolutionized Our Understanding of Unconventional Reservoirs

Abstract:
For decades, RTA has been used by reservoir engineers to understand well performance drivers and quantify reserves. More recently, RTA has firmly established itself as a core component of an integrated reservoir study. The reason for this is simple- when coupling its results with those from other subsurface sciences, it has been repeatedly demonstrated to greatly reduce uncertainty surrounding reservoir and fracture properties; properties which must be understood to optimize a field development program. This presentation will demonstrate the latest applications of RTA, by itself and as part of an integrated workflow. Case studies featuring examples from the Bone Spring, Spraberry, Wolfcamp, and Eagle Ford will be showcased.

Speaker:John Thompson, Anderson Thompson Reservoir Strategies

Bio:John Thompson (M.Sc. P. Eng.) is a subject-matter expert in the field of Rate Transient Analysis (RTA) with a specialization in shale well interpretation. His work experience includes a wide variety of reservoir engineering studies, catalyst synthesis for in-situ upgrading and refining of heavy oil, and chemical enhanced oil recovery (surfactant-polymer design). As a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), he has authored five papers in the field of well performance, while also serving as a session chair and a program committee member at many SPE events. Since 2009, he has analyzed thousands of unconventional wells spanning all major shale plays in Canada, the U.S. and Argentina. His work has provided insight into: production forecasting, reserves estimation, well spacing and completions optimization, identifying refrac and workover candidates, stimulation effectiveness, artificial-lift best practices, well interference, geo-mechanical effects, and risk assessment.
