A BEER Carol
Drinking & Writing Theater 's All New Show A BEER Carol

A BEER Carol runs from November 24 to December 19, 2012, Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. (running time of 60 minutes). A BEER Carol is a live radio play that tells the story of the evil CEO Bud Miller of Milweiser, the large, heartless brewers of swill. Haunted by the ghosts of the four ingredients of beer--hops, barley, water and yeast--and faced with his past, present and his possible ill-fated future, Bud Miller must decide if he can change into a better human being and a better brewer.

CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"A Beer Carol":  A goodly amount of the theatrical output from craft beer advocates Steve Mosqueda and Sean Benjamin (the men behind "Drinking & Writing") tends to focus on love of a hoppy brew. It was only a matter of time before they incorporated that into a Christmas show, and "A Beer Carol" is the inspired result.  Staged as a 1940s-era radio play (a nice riff on similar versions of "It's a Wonderful Life"), a corporate blowhard named Bud Miller (get it?) runs a large brewery that churns out the kind of mass-produced watery swill that makes beer purists lose their minds. Following the Dickens template, a series of ghosts visit him on Christmas Eve, with reformation on the mind.

Mosqueda and Benjamin still have to work out some kinks with their back-of-the-bar space at the Haymarket (a better sound system is sorely needed), but the show has an embraceable subversive charm. The bit in which Tiny Tim gets smacked on the head after he utters yet another annoying platitude is one of the funnier recurring gags in the show. Carolyn Shoemaker is the cast MVP, voicing everything from the goober-mouthed Tiny Tim to a jazzily seductive ghost.

Tickets are $15.00 and are available at www.drinkingandwriting.com. Limited food menu available during show. No limits on beer though.
