An Evening of Irish Song with John Doyle & John Williams
Wrangler's Great American Music Series presents an evening of Irish song with John Doyle and John Williams

The duo of guitarist/singer/songwriter John Doyle and accordion/whistles player John Williams represents the pinnacle in traditional Irish, British Isles folk, and Americana music. With decades of collective and individual experience and accomplishments in Irish, English folk, oldtime, bluegrass, and soundtracks for film, TV and theatre, Doyle and Williams together embody the most dynamic and creative traditions in the genre. Together and individually, Doyle and Williams have performed worldwide at every major folk festival from Telluride, Colorado to Dublin, Ireland and all across Europe. Their April 21, 2017 performance at Greensboros Van Dyke Performance Space is a rare opportunity to see two old friends, both true masters of tradition, performing together again.

Doyle and Williams first came together in the early 90s as founding members of the GRAMMY nominated band, Solas, providing two-fifths of the bands signature groundbreaking sound. Its impossible to overstate the impact that Solas had on traditional Irish music. The band revolutionized an entire genre, with Doyle and Williams playing a central role in the creation of the Solas sound. Since then, both artists have only further expanded their musical horizons.

JOHN DOYLE

Doyle on guitar has risen to a level occupied by him alone. No one is a better guitarist than him right now. His chops, always assured and adroit, have now entered a rarefied zone of inspired, instinctive, in-the-moment creativity that made me gasp in awe and for breath. - Wall St. Journal

In 2000, John Doyle embarked on a solo career and in recent years has become widely praised for his articulate, accomplished songwriting - as well as his utterly recognizable and powerful guitar playing. Johns unique guitar work can be heard on over 120 recordings of Irish, English folk, bluegrass, old-time and Americana music (Tim OBrien, Alison Brown, Linda Thompson, Kate Rusby, Eileen Ivers among them). Doyle has served as Music Director and guitarist for folk legend Joan Baez along with lead duties as guitarist for country/folk singer songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter. He is a long-time featured member of the Transatlantic Sessions - a veritable Whos Who of Celtic and Americana music performed in Glasgow,Scotland every year, now set to make its MerleFest debut in April 2017. His 2009 duo recording with Chicago fiddler Liz Carroll was nominated for a GRAMMY in the Best World Music Recording category, making the duo the only other Irish group besides The Chieftans to receive the World Music nomination. That same year John and Liz performed on St. Patricks Day for President Obama, Congress and Supreme Court justices.

JOHN WILLIAMS

Navigating between explosive ensemble playing and masterful understatement, John Williams is out on the ocean of sound in a steam packed tradition taking soundings as deep as the sea. - Michael O Suilleabhain

John Williams was born in Chicago to a family whose musical roots date back to late 1800s house dances in rural County Clare, Ireland. His grandfather and father entertained generations of Irish dancers with their masterful performances on the concertina, an instrument that Williams playing would later earn All Ireland Champion accolades. Today Williams plays over 10 instruments and is a mainstay of the Chicago traditional music scene, performing at over 300 events a year. His musicianship has earned him numerous awards, like Chicagos Magazine Best in Chicago award, Irish Musicians Associations Musician of the Year, and two features on Radio and Television of Irelands (RTE) The Pure Drop. Williams is a respected teacher of Irish traditional music, serving on the faculty of institutions like The Willie Clancy Fest, St. Xavier University, and the University of Notre Dame. John Williams has also appeared on the silver screen as bandleader and composer in two films: The Traveller, and Road to Perdition (with Paul Newman and Tom Hanks) who together performed his Perdition Piano Duet commissioned for the scene by director, Sam Mendes.
