Mackay Mining ATV Tour

This years theme for Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month (IAHPM) is Adventures in Idaho. What better adventure than exploring one of Idahos historic mining towns. Mackay was known as Copper City for its proximately to White Knob copper mines. In 1901, John Mackay, who discovered the Comstock Lode in Nevada, also discovered the White Knob copper mines. Mackay convinced Wayne Darlington a renowned engineer to extend the Oregon Shortline Railroad up to the mines to take advantage of this promising discovery. Today, the White Knob Historic Preservation Committee now offers a self-guided tour around many of the mining remains overlooking Mackay. There are several structures that remain: the old smelter, Cossack tunnel and compressor site, cabins, and the town site of White Knob. Also the tramway head house is a fascinating site.

On this special guided-tour, the Mackay Mayor will take you along the old rail line where youll explore this significant site. The tours last approximately 4 hours, one beginning at 9:00am, the other at 2:30pm. Those interested in attending the guided-tour will be required to ride in a 2-seater or 4-seater ATV (provided with ticket purchase sharing a vehicle with other attendees is highly probable). If youd like to share with a particular person/group please let us know in advance. Attendees are also responsible for their own water, snacks, and sunscreen. Check the weather and dress appropriately.

One ticket includes: 1 seat on an ATV, a guaranteed spot on the guided-tour with Mackays Mayor, and Idaho Archaeology and Historic Preservation Month swag. Please arrive early to sign your attendee paperwork. There will be a brief discussion of the event prior to departure. *Tickets are required to attend the event*
