Norsk Folkedans Stemne presents Roo Lester and Jerry Walsh this August at our Salmon dinner and Norsk Folkedans Stemne!
Roo Lester, a California native now living in Chicago, began folk dancing as part of rainy day Physical Education at school. Norwegian dance classes with Ingvar & Jofrid Sodal at a dance camp while in college inspired Roo to study Norwegian folk dance, especially the turning dances including bygdedans, runddans/gammeldans and mixers. She wrote her thesis on The United States Scandinavian-Dance-Community and Norsk bygdedans. Roo traveled around the USA attending courses in Norwegian and Scandinavian dance. Since 1983 Roo has traveled extensively in Norway and Sweden studying dance and participating in dance and music events. Since she was in college Roo has been a dance professional teaching a variety of international folk dance cultures, especially Norwegian and Swedish dance, culture and crafts to people of all ages throughout the USA including colleges, university and other dance venues. Roo's teaching is infused with a great love of dancing and a desire to help others to love it too. Her hallmarks include her clear, positive teaching that incorporates background information, styling and technique and her ability to present the basic concepts of dance to dancers of all levels in a fun and lighthearted manner. She is a master teacher who can smoothly guide the student from a basic exercise through to a turning step with all parts of the progression seeming equally accessible. Roo is recognized as one of the foremost exponents of Scandinavian dance in the US.
Jerry Walsh started his Nordic dance journey in 1981 when he found himself, quite unexpectedly, enjoying a folkdance class that friends insisted he attend. Since then, he has been to dozens of workshops and week-long camps all over the US, and has traveled to Scandinavia 15 times, to study with recognized bygdedans tradition bearers. As a performer, Jerry has had a long and varied career. When dancing, he strives to find the balance between unbridled exuberance and keeping within the dance tradition. His greatest challenge and joy as a director was devising ways to stage and showcase Norwegian and Swedish bygdedanser for a general audience. In 2015, he and Judy, his wife, were the featured dancers for the Puget Sound Christmas Revels. In 1990, Jerry was asked to start teaching for Skandia. Since then he has taught Basics and Advanced classes as well as special workshops. He has a reputation for precision dancing and clear instruction with a light-hearted approach and feels privileged to teach with Roo Lester at the 2017 Norsk Folkedans Stemne.
Peter Michaelsen has pursued Scandinavian music for over 30 years, making numerous trips to "the old countries" to study and perform. He plays both regular fiddle and Norwegian hardanger fiddle, and is a mainstay of the folk music scene in Washington, where he teaches Scandinavian fiddle styles.
Poulsbo Leikarringen has 80+ dancers ranging from 5-18 years old from the Kitsap Peninsula. Their goal is to pass down a love of our Nordic culture to future generations.
Jane Anderson has been playing at dances in the Puget Sound area for many years with her husband Jeff Anderson. She is a self taught musician, introduced to Nordic music through family links. Jane's father played fiddle and accordion. Jane was a late-bloomer who began playing the button accordion at around age 40.
Jeff Anderson is from Waterville, Washington, and has been playing fiddle since the age of 15. For over thirty years he has played for shows and dances. Both of his grandfathers were Norwegian-style fiddlers from North Dakota, and he is carrying on the musical traditions of his family. Both he and Jane play with Nordic Spirit, formed in 1999.
The Toraders are a group of musicians playing two row accordion. They have been studying and learning this instrument over the years at Norsk Folkedans Stemne. This will be their first public performance and we are very excited to hear them!
We are also expecting a visit from our former Leif Erikson Lodge member and queen, Ingrid Hamberg who is a traditional fiddler. She moved to Norway to study in Rauland in Telemark and now works at the school she attended, Raulands Academy. There she met another fiddler named David. They were married last summer!
Look forward to performances and instruction in traditional dances and music from Norway at Norsk Folkedans Stemne being held at historic Fort Worden this year.

What is a Norsk Folkedans Stemne (nynorsk): In Norway, a stemne is a gathering of folk dancers and musicians sharing their knowledge of dances and music. Now in our fourth decade, we carry on this living tradition with select group of dance and music instructors. Norwegian folkdance groups from Canada, the United States, and Norway share this wonderful opportunity to dance favorites, learn new dances and music, and information.
Come and enjoy the immersion for all levels of dancing from beginning to advanced into all the types of Norwegian folkdancing and music from the bygdedansar, runddansar, songzdansar, and turdansar og rekkedansar (figure dances and longways dances). Our website will have updates as to the dances being taught at www.seattlestemne.org
