Bellingham Repertory Dance presents "no such place"

"no such place" boasts six new dances from choreographers nation-wide, as well as one returning piece from our past repertory. This winters repertory exposes an unusually rich and palpably weighted slice of contemporary dance and culture. Each of the seven pieces comprising "no such place" offer strange glimpses into complete worlds of particular social structures, gravity, texture, evolution, and narrative. Though the realities built by the dancers within each world are clear and consistent, the audience will feel as though they are peeking through a narrow doorway into a room which stretches unknowingly beyond view. Like post-modern cubism, BRD alum Ella Mahlers duet "this and this too" (choreographed in Seattle for Relay Dance Collective) suggests a relationship that either expresses itself across a span of time, or exists as many multiplicities at once. Somebodies Dance Theaters "Quietly, Quickly" explores the heightened social and physical awareness bred by war in a duet set against an anxious backdrop of a chorus of dancers, and Joy Frenchs "1st/2nd" invites audiences into the nuance and absurdity of laughter between close friends. Threaded through the concerts offerings is the genuine and daring use of movement as a language for building not only narrative but also emotional texture.

Our mission to present audiences with accessible work is clearly seen in the programming of "no such place," but is here paired with a sensitivity to the cultural tensions undeniably at play in our changing national landscape. What emerges is an evening of beautiful but challenging works that will draw you in, chew you up, and leave you wondering what youve just seen and felt.
