God of Carnage: April 7 - 23
Opening on April 7th, the Willits Community Theatre presents God of Carnage written by French playwright Yasmina Reza and translated into English by Christopher Hampton. This internationally acclaimed blockbuster won two of the most prestigious awards of the theatre world in 2009: The TONY Award for Best Play (for the Broadway production) and the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Comedy (for its UK Premiere at the Gielgud Theatre). And this is only one of Ms. Rezas many extraordinary successes.
The play depicts two couples dealing with an incident involving their 11-year old sons, who were in a fight. One of the boys suffered serious damage to two teeth. All four adults make a concerted effort to approach the situation in a reasonable manner. However, negotiations quickly degrade into acrimony and mayhem, exposing inevitable rifts not only between but also within the couples. Along the way the audience will witness some outrageous and often outrageously funny behavior. The sparks fly and we are treated to an exhilarating display of human weaknesses and devious attitudes. This is a comedy. The Broadway production generated wall-to-wall gales of laughter. But it is a comedy with a serious side, with depth and with insight into the quirks of modern human relationships. There is a little bit of everything here. Rezas eye for human folly is remarkable and on display in all of her plays and novels.

David Partch, who has been heavily involved at WCT for years, will direct a stellar cast of experienced and talented actors, many of whom are new to our theatre. Colby Friend has appeared at WCT in other plays (My Three Angels, The Nightmare). Andrea McCullough is a new MD at the Redwood Clinic and has acted at Mendocino College and the Ukiah Players Theatre. This will be Andy Watsons 2nd play at WCT, playing back-to-back after his debut in the February production of Sunshine Boys. Alyson Blair is also new to Willits, but comes with performance experience at community theaters in the town of Mendocino and Laverne in Southern California.

Director David Partch comments: Author Yasmina Reza has discovered a gold mine, which she exploits mercilessly in her writing. She takes a more or less ordinary situation and then lets her characters play out the scene in some very unexpected fashion, behaving in a manner many people might like to if they dared. As a result we delight in these mischievous, sometimes slightly improper and often explosive exchanges. In God of Carnage she is once again at her best, creating between four very diverse characters an interaction that startles us, but also remains perfectly logical, perfectly understandable. As a result, we cannot help but respond, perhaps with sympathy, perhaps with repulsion, but always with a smile. Its a magic formula.

The modern era (roughly starting with Descartes) can be defined as the era in which mankind decided, once and for all, that they can and will try to control everything. We are now beginning to be able to see through this pervasive tendency and we are experiencing some of the devastating consequences of this attitude. This play brilliantly puts on display a microcosm of our attempts to control  our children, ourselves, our spouses, others, our environment, etc.  and our failures to do so. Something that clearly rings true in todays world. Come enjoy the spectacle and support your local theatre.
