Music of Ireland with Laura Byrne, Donna Long, Eamon O'Leary & Rose Flanagan at Cellar Stage
Laura Byrne's flute playing has been described as "effortless, powerful and engaging." Highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic for her mastery of the Irish traditional flute and whistle. Laura Bryne is based in Baltimore, Maryland and recently won a Maryland State Arts Council award for solo performance. She has performed throughout North America and in Ireland and released her second solo recording, Lucky Day, in July 2010. A sought-after teacher, Laura has taught at the Catskills Irish Arts Week in East Durham, NY, and at workshops across the U.S. Laura has committed herself to the playing of the older generation of flute players through countless trips to Ireland and from close study of the emigrees to the United States. Her mentors and influences are many and include East Galway flute player Mike Rafferty, Sligo/Roscommon style flute player, Catherine McEvoy, Matt Molloy of Chieftains fame, and East Galway style button accordionist Billy McComiskey. Through her direct study of this unbroken musical lineage and because of her devotion to the teaching and promulgation of all aspects of Irish musical culture, Laura is a well-known mainstay in Maryland's vibrant Irish music scene.

At the age of five Donna Long began taking piano lessons with her father, Byron Long, a jazz/classical pianist who instilled in Donna a love for music. As a child, Donna was exposed to many different genres of music, including players from the old and new Jazz eras, Classical, Scottish, Indian, and African. In 1978, she moved to the Baltimore and heard fiddler, Brendan Mulvihill playing Irish music. He inspired her to pick up the fiddle and gave her a solid foundation in style and playing. She then began to accompany him on the piano and now Donna is considered one of the finest pianists, anywhere, playing Irish music. As a former member of the internationally acclaimed Irish group Cherish the Ladies, the Smithsonian Institution asked Donna to represent Irish Music in the series, Piano Traditions celebrating 300 years of the piano. She was also commissioned by the Library of Congress in to write a composition for fiddle and piano. She wrote a slow air called Before the Snow Falls, and a reel to accompany the air called Pandora's Box. These tunes can be found in the Library of Congress. Donna has now passed her music onto her son Jesse Smith and helped produce his first solo recording entitled The Hurricane. In addition to these recordings Donna can be heard as a guest artist on many recordings backing up other musicians and also on the motion picture soundtrack Out of Ireland. It is Donna's is devotion to preserving Irish music in its traditional form while maintaining the integrity of the piano that makes her playing unique.

While growing up in Dublin, Eamon O'Leary developed an interest in Irish music through his friendship with the Mayock family, noted traditional musicians originally from County Mayo. When he moved to New York City in 1992, he met guitarist John Doyle and fiddle player Patrick Ourceau, among others, and has since become a fixture in the city's thriving Irish music scene. Eamon has toured extensively throughout Europe and North America, performing with many of Irish music's great players, including Paddy Keenan, Mick Moloney, Tommy Peoples, and James Keane, and has recorded with singer Susan McKeown and flute player Emer Mayock. In addition to his performance schedule, Eamon has taught at numerous music programs including the Augusta Heritage Center, the Catskills Irish Arts Week, and the Alaska Irish Music Camp. In 2004, he and Patrick Ourceau released a live recording, Live at Mona's, documenting their many years hosting a Monday night session on New York's Lower East Side.

Rose Conway Flanagan is a traditional Irish fiddler from Rockland County, New York who originally began music lessons as a child with Martin Mulvilhill while was growing up in the Bronx. She further developed her Sligo style of playing with the help of Martin Wynne and her older brother Brian. Great New York fiddlers like Andy McGann and Paddy Reynolds were also frequent visitors to the Conway household, which was the Bronx version of a "teach ceoil" (house of music) in the best Irish tradition.

Rose currently has a large music school in her hometown of Pearl River where she is hard at work preparing the next generation of great traditional musicians, which include several All-Ireland winners and medalists.

Rose has performed and been an instructor at the Alaska fiddle camp, The Catskills Irish Arts week, The Swannanoa Gathering, The O'Flaherty Irish Music Retreat, Fiddle and Pick Irish Camp, and Mad for Trad week in the U.S. She has also taught at the DeDanaan Dance Camp in Vancouver, British Columbia and Scoile Eigse in Cavan, Ireland. She has also taught workshops at the Northeast Tional, and at various CCE conventions. Rose also runs seisuns, plays with her group the Green Gates Ceili Band and performs in various concerts throughout the area.

Doors open at 7:00 pm. General admission seating.
