Central City Chorus presents "Light and Shadow"

Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, continues its 36th season with "Light and Shadow", a contemplative program exploring the questions of divinity through the metaphorical treatment of light and darkness in music. The concert will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, March 18th at 7:00 p.m.

The cornerstone work is Herbert Howells' poignant "Requiem", written just three years before the untimely loss of the composers nine-year old son in 1935; the tragedy affected Howells so greatly that he refused to allow the work to be published until nearly half a century later in 1980, three years before his own passing. Other works featured include Eric Whitacre's luminous "Sainte-Chappelle" written to celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Tallis Scholars, as well as John Rutter's "Hymn to the Creator of Light" which was commissioned in memory of Howells and premièred at a special choral evensong in Gloucester Cathedral at the 1994 Three Choirs Festival where a new stained glass window was dedicated to mark the centenary of the composers birth. Rounding out the program are works by James MacMillan, Gustav Holst, Edward Elgar, and riks Eenvalds.
