CONFESSIONS OF A SUBCULTURALIST
Written and Performed by Michael Holman
Friday, March 24 | 7 pm | $10

Southampton Arts Center is thrilled to present artist Michael Holmans spoken word performance piece, Confessions of a Subculturalist, that brings to life his personal experiences as an artist in New York City, his archives, and their collective importance to World Culture. In this 90-minute performance, the audience will be taken on a journey through short story-telling - augmented by film, video, and photography projection, that will surely whet the appetite of any audience looking to explore contemporary, American Popular, and Underground Urban Culture, including the creation of the first ever, nationally syndicated Hip Hop TV Show called Graffiti Rock in 1984, featuring The New York City Breakers, Rapper Kool Moe Dee, and the first ever televised appearance of Run DMC.

Also covered in this unique spoken word piece is the formation of internationally celebrated dance crew, The New York City Breakers, in 1982, who performed for President Ronald Reagan, Prince Andrew of Great Britain, the King and Queen of Norway, and many other dignitaries, and with artists and celebrities, including Elizabeth Taylor, Sarah Vaughn, Frank Sinatra, Ben Vereen, Meryl Streep, Muhammad Ali, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Prince and the Alvin Ailey Dance Company. Additionally, the creation of art/noise band with artist Jean-Michel Basquiat in 1979, performed at all the celebrated New York landmark venues, including The Mudd Club, Hurrahs and CBGBs, at which time Holman spent his time with art world luminaries such as William Burroughs, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Keith Haring, designer Norma Kamali, and more.  And finally, Holman talks about his encounter with London Punk Rock impresario Malcolm McLaren in 1981, which leads to the opportunity to bring Hip Hop Culture to the Manhattan nightclub, Negril, where Hip Hop Pioneers DJ Afrika Bambaataa, Fab 5 Freddy, The Cold Crush Brothers, Phase II, Rammellzee, Futura, and the Father of Hip Hop, DJ Kool Herc, first performed for the Downtown/East Village crowd.

Michael Holman was no mere bystander to contemporary New York culture, and by the end of the spoken word performance, it will be evident that he is one of the most important influencers, having helped shape world culture as we know it.
