Danilo Brito :: Choro da Alegria at The Old Church

Danilo Brito is important to the world of music both for his extraordinary musicianship, and for the unique musical and cultural tradition he promulgates through his work thechoromusic of Brazil. His is the quintessential story of a child prodigy, born with talent and interest in music far beyond his years, coupled with the good fortune to have a family steeped in Brazil's musical traditions. At the age of ten he began to visit music shops that hostedRodas de Choro, informal gatherings of musicians who meet to playchoro. Old enough to be his grandfathers, the musicians bestowed a particularly special compliment upon him, saying that he was the reincarnation of Jacob do Bandolim, one of the most important figures inchorohistory. Six years later, Danilo would go on to win the most prestigious award competition for Brazilian music, thePrêmio Visa de Música Popular Brasilia. For his current ensemble, he has chosen traditionalchoroinstrumentation 7-string guitar, guitar, cavaquinho, and percussion and a group of musicians whose talent and devotion has produced an ensemble operating at the highest level of performance within the genre. Their work has just been recorded on the 2014 album,Danilo Brito.Chorois considered the first characteristically Brazilian genre of urban popular music. The literal translation of the word is to cry, but its use in naming this music is figurative and points to its emotive power. More often bright than blue, the music is marked by syncopation, counterpoint, improvisation and virtuosity.

Choro da Alegria
A Portland-based ensemble, dedicated to playing the wonderful melodies of various Brazilian composers. Our group draws much inspiration from the genre Choro, which has been loosely called Brazilian ragtime. Beyond Choro we include in our repertoire classic tunes of Bossa Nova and MPB. We are versatile and experienced, playing venues ranging from cozy wine bars to corporate fundraisers. CHORO DA ALEGRIA means, Choro of happiness. We hope you will enjoy the beauty of Brazilian melodies as much as we enjoy performing them!
Pam Beaty (7-string guitar, cavaquinho) is a classically-trained guitarist who has been a long-time devotee of Brazilian music. She is passionate about various styles of Brazilian music and has traveled twice to Brazil to study music as well as Portuguese. Pam teaches guitar in the Portland area and is an active member of Portlands Bossa Nova and Choro scene. She also performs in the bluegrass group Ash Creek and the eclectic duo Shinbone Alley.
Tom Pinit (bandolim/Brazilian mandolin) began playing stringed instruments before entering kindergarten. Starting with violin, progressing to electric bass, and most recently mandolin, Tom was bitten by the Brazilian music bug soon after taking up the bandolim. Tom has studied choro with world-renowned musicians Mike Marshall & Choro Famoso (CA), Dudu Maia (Brazil), Douglas Lora (Brazil), and Jovino Santos Neto (WA). He is active in Portlands choro scene playing in several local groups, at the regular Roda de Choro jam sessions, and the annual Dia do Choro PDX celebration.
Esteban Diaz (percussion) hails from sunny San Diego and brings diverse drumming experience to the group. When not playing choro, youll find Esteban playing samba, maracatu, and Japanese taiko with various groups around Portland.
Peter Fung (guitar, cavaquinho, percussion) has been happily obsessed with samba and choro for the last two decades. He has been a performing member of the Manhattan School of Samba (NYC), the Lions of Batucada (Portland), and Samba do Coraçao (SF Bay Area). Peter has studied music in Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Salvador, Brazil. Among his teachers are Arnaldinho do Cavaco and Jorge Aleba. Peter is founder of Portlands (OR) first weekly Roda de Choro and the annual Dia do Choro PDX.
