Love Hurts: A CWO Valentine
Is love obsession? Self-destruction? Subterfuge? Surrender? Whatever. Love Hurts! But, its not all heartbreak. Community Womens Orchestra (CWO) presents a musical valentine Sunday, February 4:00 pm, at Lake Merritt United Methodist Church in Oakland.
Jean Sibelius, Finlands tormented symphonist, seems to have written Concerto in D minor for Violin and Orchestra as a reflection on his well-known heartbreak at not being a distinguished violinist himself. CWO welcomes soloist Elizabeth Castro Abrams, performing the first movement on the February 12 concert.
Elizabeth Castro Abrams graduated from Oberlin College and Conservatory in May of 2015, earning degrees in both Violin Performance and Psychology. She has extensive experience with music teaching, performance, and program development. In 2014, she was selected for the Litomysl International String Masterclass, where she studied with Milan Vitek and Per Enoksson, concertmaster of the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, and participated in a touring concert series in the Czech Republic. For two years Elizabeth was an active member of the Asociación Nacional de Conciertos (ANC) summer music festival faculty in Panama and pioneered a chamber program there in 2015. She also served as concertmaster for the ANC's 30th Anniversary Orchestra. After returning to the States, Elizabeth worked at Enriching Lives through Music, an El Sistema inspired music program in San Rafael. She soloed with the Mill Valley Philharmonic last year, and in addition to performing with Community Women's Orchestra this year, she will also be soloing with the Sonoma County Philharmonic. Aside from music, Elizabeth maintains a great passion for psychology and now works on the User Experience Research Team at Uber in San Francisco.
Symphonie Fantastique's March to the Scaffold portrays another kind of love gone bad, really bad: Hector Berlioz is leading the audience through the opium-crazed dreams of a lovesick artist. Gabriel Faurés Suite from Pelléas et Mélisande narrates illicit love and the husband who stops it, ending up broken-hearted himself.
Dont despair! said Dana Sadava, CWO Music Director. We leave it to composer Gwyneth Walker to lift our spirits with her soaring work For Peace and Hope. In it she explores a different kind of love, love for bigger ideals rather than romance. Dr. Walker has expressed her hope to bring healing and unity through this moving work. We were privileged to play for Dr. Walker recently and hear about her inspirations and aspirations.

The Community Women's Orchestra, established in 1985, is a California 501 c3 corporation. is a volunteer, all-female orchestra committed to promoting women's orchestral music in a fun and welcoming environment.
