Children's Laternenfest - German Crafts, Parade & Sing a long
German School Chicago welcomes children of all ages and backgrounds to a fun-filled autumn celebration with crafts, singing and a lantern parade at dusk. Admission includes all the supplies needed for kids to make and light (safely) their very own traditional German lanterns. Children will learn traditional lantern songs, then families will proceed outside to parade through charming Lincoln Square. The parade will end at approximately 5:15 pm with a final big sing-along in Giddings Plaza.
This much-beloved European tradition holds rich memories for adults: Patricia, Museum Intern at the DANK Haus, lit up when the Lanternenfest was announced. "It is my absolute favorite memory from childhood, every year I couldn't wait for St. Martin's Day." German School Chicago and the DANK Haus are excited to share this cultural experience with children of all backgrounds and languages and bring the magic of families singing and swinging little lanterns in the autumn light to the city of Chicago.
This event is Sunday, November 11 at 2:30pm.
Admission is $7.00 per crafting child, parents free.
Baked goods, juice, water and glühwein will be available for purchase.

About The Lantern Walk
The Lantern Walk coincides with the feast of St. Martin of Tours on November 11. According to the most famous story of the saint, Martin was a Roman soldier who was traveling one cold winter night when he saw a beggar in the streets. Even though Martin felt frozen to his toes, he was compelled to cut his cloak in two and give one of the halves to the beggar. That night, in a dream, he saw Christ clothed in the piece of the cloak he'd given the beggar. Afterward, Martin was less interested in the business of battle. When Martin finally left the service with an honorable discharge, he founded a number of monasteries and was elected Bishop of Tours in 371. According to the legend, Martin did not want to be elected, and tried to escape by hiding in a barn full of geese. However, the geese gave him away with their honking! Ergo, it's tradition to eat roast goose on St. Martin's feast day.

About the DANK Haus
The DANK Haus, located in Chicago's traditionally German Lincoln Square neighborhood, represents a chapter membership of over 800 Americans of German descent, their friends and families and the community in general. The DANK Haus also houses a German language school for both children and adults, a closed stack research library and the DANK Museum.
