Remembering George Michael: A Different Story Documentary Tribute
Join us on Friday, January 13th from 7:30-10:00pm, when we pay tribute to the loss of a British superstar turned legend. The FIlmmakers' Gallery will honor and celebrate the life of George Michael by screening a very rare upclose and personal documentary called, "George Michael: A Different Story".
A Fan Review: "I had have the luck to have see this film...I'm a George Michael's 'massive fan' and I really think that this film is a wonderful gift he makes to all his fans, all around the world...and thanks to this film, young fans and all other people who love just his songs without being a 'fan' can learn more on him. I love this film because we could see George Michael as we never see him, talking about himself quietly, with sometimes nostalgia, with fun too and with sincerity!!! About the Film -
A candid, self-deprecating and altogether winning career-to-date overview, George Michael: A Different Story finds the witty and articulate pop star looking back with unblinking candor and wry humor on an eventful 20-year-plus run that embraces worldwide hit records, personal tragedy, public scandal and more than his fair share of fashion violations. Already broadcast in the U.K., well-received at the Berlin fest (where Michael presided over a packed press conference) and slated for the inaugural Wide Angle sidebar of the Tribeca fest, pic is substantial enough for limited theatrical play prior to strong cable and ancillary life.
Accompanied by his friend David, Michael points out landmarks in North London, where he grew up Georgios Kyriacos Panayioutou (though he never specifically says this). Bruised by early record company chicanery, he and pal Andrew Ridgeley hit the bigtime in 1982 with the high-energy pop of Wham! Among pics high points is duos first joint interview in nearly 20 years, during which they sort of clear up the question of whether they were ever romantically involved with each other.
He's a singer that has allowed himself to become something of a joke to the general public over the last decade. After turning around his arrest in the late 90's, the drug related car incidents in the past 7 or so years meant he became more renowned for his erratic personal life than for his sporadic recordings.
This short documentary(with French subtitles) is almost a decade old so it misses all the recent troubles but there is no doubt he would openly talk about them. George comes across a very likeable guy, open and candid about the ups and downs so far. When it opens with a Simon Cowell remarking on his career it isn't the best of starts but this is straight forward enough in tracking back from his Wham! days and through his solo career to the mid 00's.
Off the back of his huge success with Andrew Ridgley the sky was the limit with his solo career, his Faith album selling over 20 million copies. He was unable to handle the level of fame that came with it, proving to be the turning point that changed the course of his career. He had the opportunity to move into the exclusive realm of the MJ's, Madonna's and Princes (it is interesting to learn that George wrote and produced nearly all the Wham material and his solo work) but chose to step back, refusing to promote Listen Without Prejudice (his best work by the way) which led to his battle with Sony Records.
