Concert for Courage - In Support of the Women's March on Washington
We are pleased to host this concert featuring three progressive songstresses on the eve of the Women's March on Washington . Join us in celebration, and to raise funds for a good cause.
Admission is free, but contributions will be strongly encouraged in benefit of Planned Parenthood and Equality Virginia . Doors at 7:30 pm; snacks/drinks available.
Heather Mae
It is rare to find an artist who startles your senses on many levels, engaging the part of your brain that makes you shake your hips, but also raise your fist in solidarity. Heather Mae does just that.
An imaginative lyricist with a powerhouse voice, Heather Mae is forging new ground with her newest album released on June 10th, 2016. Entitled I AM ENOUGH, it earned early praise by FLURT Magazine as "...every bit appealing to the ears as it is empowering."
With producer Mark Williams (Sucker Punch Recording Co.) at the wheel, the collection of five songs is a bold breakout from her former years as a folk singer-songwriter strumming a ukulele. Mae breaks ground in I AM ENOUGH not only for her interesting indie-pop sound, but also for her musical take on touchy subjects ranging from LGBTQ discrimination, gender stereotypes, body image, and mental health issues. This is what sets Mae apart -- she seeks to write music for those that need an anthem and doesn't shy away from tackling topics not often heard in pop music.
Wanderer and No Poor Soul are reflections of Mae's own experience of publicly coming out and the relief associated with finding love that accepts you just as you are externally and internally. Stand Up wraps up the entire record with its challenge to listeners to fight against intolerances that so many of us face, such as racism, sexism and other prejudices. Mae also includes references to the Black Lives Matter movement and the June SCOTUS ruling on gay marriage which destroyed DOMA.
Crys Matthews
DC's Crys Matthews blends Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk into a bold, complex performance steeped in traditional melodies and punctuated by honest, original lyrics. Having been compared to everyone from Toshi Reagon to Tracy Chapman to Ruthie Foster, Matthews eclectic infusion of genres has won her honorable mentions at the 2013 and 2014 Mid-Atlantic Song Contest and extensive radio play from Woman of Substance radio to WTJU-Charlottesville and WMRA-Harrisonburg to KBOO-Portland.
Equally at home in an acoustic listening room as she is on stage at large music festivals, Matthews has quickly gathered a loyal following on the east coast playing such prestigious venues as Jammin Java, The Hamilton and Busboys and Poets. Matthews festival and showcase roster has included SXSW, the 40th Michigan Womyns Music Festival, Folk Alliance International, 30A Songwriters Festival (which she will be performing at again in January 2016), Northeast Regional Folk Alliance and many more.
When Matthews entered a talent show at Appalachian State University on a whim in 2002 with the first song she ever wrote and won first place, she never expected to one day be performing with artists she used to listen to on her iPod, such as Melissa Ferrick (Out/Loud 2009) and the Indigo Girls and Dar Williams (Folkfest St. Pete in 2010).
A prolific lyricist and composer, Matthews has found inspiration in her surroundings; from driving through the Blue Ridge Mountains to the compelling and heart-breaking love story of Richard and Mildred Loving. Thoughtful, realistic and emotional, Matthews songs speak to the voice of our generation and remind us why music indeed soothes the soul.

A sure-footed young singer-songwriter, in the words of The New York Times, Jean Rohe writes one-of-a-kind narrative songs, concerned as much with the internal world as with the external. Her songs, which range from fantastical riffs on old folktales to autobiographical sojourns, to phonojournalism, a genre of her own invention, have won recognition from the ASCAP Foundation and the New York Songwriters Circle. She can be found fronting her large ensemble, collaborating as one half of the duo Robinson & Rohe, or playing intimate solo sets in the US and abroad. Her latest release with her band, Jean Rohe & the End of the World Show, won three Independent Music Awards in 2014. An Elmore Magazine reviewer hailed it as "enchanting" and "remarkable in so many ways I can think of no comparison."
A true citizen artist, she gracefully approaches matters of social concern with artistry and heart. Her 2013 video release, National Anthem: Arise! Arise! is an aspirational alternative national anthem for the United States, which has now been performed by choirs and bands across the country and was published last year in the second edition of the popular songbook Rise Up Singing (Rise Again). No Depression wrote, "Not only does she make astoundingly beautiful music but she is thoughtful, reflective, and courageous."
In 2016, Jean was a finalist in the Telluride Troubadour songwriting contest. She is hard at work on her performance memoir, The Odysseus Agreement, as well as two new records, one with her band and the other with Robinson & Rohe, both set for release in early 2017. She lives in Brooklyn, NY.
