11/10 - THE MEN IN ME: A Solo Woman Show about our Fathers, Our Sons, and Our Brothers
The Men in Me: Our Fathers, Our Brothers, Our Sons  Weaving More Compassion and Power Into Their Stories is a multimedia production brought to life on stage, through a one-woman theatre piece, and on record, through a professionally-pressed soundtrack. Created by artist Anita Shontel Woodley, these contemporary works are hard-hitting collections of melodic drama and poetry. They explore the quietly-kept narratives - of both trial and triumph - of young males living in America.

Inspired by true stories from Woodley's life, The Men in Me is a raw, honest performance about the men in her family as they fight to overcome desperate circumstances. It tells the stories of men - young and old, straight and gay, liberated and incarcerated - who hunger to grow beyond bleak circumstances and dismal statistics, and it shows how the paths they chose helped shape Woodley into the woman she is today. This show features live bass guitar and original social justice poetry.

For the last three years, Woodley has used her celebrated first play - Mama Juggs - to raise consciousness for the fight against breast cancer and to raise money for services that aid breast cancer survivors. An Oakland native, she is a multi-award-winning journalist and formerly worked for the nationally syndicated Public Radio show The Story with Dick Gordon. In 2010, after tracing her maternal roots to the Tikar people of central Africa, she brought her play Mama Juggs across the Atlantic and became the first person in her family to reconnect with her ancestral tribe.

Recommended BY THE INDY!!!
Theatre Critic Byron Woods has this to say:
"If you've caught one of Anita Shontel Woodley's one-person shows, you already know her uncanny ability to dial up a wide range of characters. But where Mama Juggs featured three generations of women facing breast cancer, her new work focuses on what she terms the "quietly kept narratives of trial and triumph" from the men in her family. The Men in Me: Our Fathers, Our Brothers, Our Sons, which premiered in California in August, examines the responses of men young and old, straight and gay, to circumstances she's described as desperate. Then it looks at how their choices and outcomes have influenced Woodley's life. We expect hard truths and sharp characters in a work that purports to be "weaving more compassion and power into their stories." Shows are at 2 and 8 p.m.; tickets run $20$50. Byron Woods
