Chilean Sunday Supper for Chiloé.
A couple of years ago, a Chilean expat began showing up at our local Slow Food events. Politely, quietly, enthusiastically, her participation grew. And, as it did, we began to learn more about her and it would be an understatement to say that we liked what we learned. Isidora Diaz is a writer for South American food & wine publications of international scope, a cookbook author, and an exceptional cook of South American cuisines. She has run Chilean-themed pop ups throughout the city, and, among her many other endeavors, works with the catering company Bleu and Fig.
Isidoras Slow Food chapter in Santiago, Chile has been instrumental in identifying outlying farmers who practice good and clean agricultural techniques and aiding them in organizing distribution and sales so they may receive fair compensation. Their crowning achievement is the Encuentro del Campo a la Ciudad (which roughly translates as an encounter with the country in the city) - a market within the capital city of Santiago that celebrates the best of Chiles agricultural heritage. With 4 years of continued operation, its proven an unqualified success, providing the city with the highest quality foodstuffs while profoundly improving the lives of the participating farmers.
This success has been reproduced in several other regions of the country, and now Isidora would like for us to help them with their most urgent endeavor yet - creating a market for the idyllic yet remote island of Chiloé.
Helping couldnt be more alluring - simply join us on November 20th, when Isidora will cook spectacular Chilean food for us and tell us more about the Chiloé project. All proceeds from the evening will go to the efforts to equip the islands market, including the purchase of basic necessities such as tables, chairs, coolers, transport containers, etc.
