Ostravská banda gives the first U.S. staged production of Salvatore Sciarrino's chamber opera Infinito Nero, a "One act Ecstasy" on text by Marie Maddalena de'Pazzi (ca. 1600). The soloist is the acclaimed Budapest-based mezzo soprano Katalin Károlyi, whose repertoire encompasses Baroque operas directed by William Christie and collaborations with composers such as Ligeti and Kurtág. Talujon Percussion, veteran performers of Cage's music, perform a broad range of his percussion pieces from 1939 to 1977, a rarely heard work by James Tenney, as well as Karlheinz Stockhausen's Kreuzspiel in a joint effort with Ostravská banda.

Formed in 2005 by Petr Kotík as the resident chamber orchestra for the biennial Ostrava Days, Ostravská banda consists of young musicians from Europe and the U.S. whose primary interest is the performance of new music. Principal conductors are Petr Kotík, Roland Kluttig, Peter Rundel, Ondřej Vrabec, Johannes Kalitzke, and Barbara Kler. The core instrumentation of 24 players can change according the requirements of each score. The repertoire include composers of the 20th century: John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Morton Feldman, Edgard Varese, Luigi Nono, and Gyorgy Ligeti, among others, and our contemporaries Louis Andriessen, Elliot Carter, Christian Wolff, Petr Kotik, Alvin Lucier, Phill Niblock, Martin Smolka, Miroslav Srnka, Peter Graham, and Petr Bakla, among many young and emerging composers. Apart from regular performances at Ostrava Days festivals, Ostravská banda performs and tours at such venues as the Paris Conservatoire, Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall, Prague Spring Festival, Akademie der Künste in Berlin, Vredenburg in Uttrecht, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and musicadhoy in Madrid, to name just a few.

Described by the New York Times as an ensemble possessing an "edgy, unflagging energy", Talujon Percussion has been mesmerizing audiences since 1990. Talujon is thoroughly committed to the expansion of the contemporary percussion repertoire as well as the education and diversification of its worldwide audience. Over the past 20 years, the ensemble has commissioned dozens of new works for percussion quartet.

The group, while maintaining a respectable touring history, always produces adventurous programs in New York City. Tajujon has presented these programs in the past to great praise, including first prize in the Chamber Music America Adventurous Programming Award. Talujon chooses its performing venues in order to maximize exposure to as broad an audience as possible. Talujon's upcoming 20th season will feature past compositions written for the group as well as new works by Eric Moe, Steven Ricks, Christian Wolff, Ross Bauer and other American composers. These performances will take place at venues such as Symphony Space, Roulette, Merkin Hall, St. Peter's Church and LeFrak Hall.

Ostravská banda & Talujon Percussion is presented as part of BEYOND CAGE, a festival focusing on John Cage's legacy in the music of our times, and running in New York City, October 22-November 7, 2012. For more information, visit: www.semensemble.org
