Eight Strings & a Whistle at Tenri 2016

Eight Strings & a Whistle returns to the Tenri Cultural Institute for its annual Fall concert, performing works by Hilary Tann, Merill Clark, Jim Hiscott, Paul Théberge and Günter Bialas.

The works on this years program use the past to reflect the present, be it musical ideas or a view of the world we live in today: Hilary Tanns The Walls of Morlais Castle illustrates the contrasts between the time this Welsh castle was a vibrant place and its present day state of ruin, whereas Merrill Clark uses a non-vocal setting of William Butler Yeats The Second Coming to color and inform his Sinfonia Ternion Gestalt. Jim Hiscotts droll Les Larmes de Polichinelle combines characteristics of the Commedia dellArte tradition with the folk music of Naples, and Paul Théberges atmospheric Maqm, composed in 1978, is inspired by the ancient Persian and Arabic system of melodic motives. German composer, Günter Bialass warm, richly colored and occasionally humorous neo classical Trio from 1945, makes use of such traditional forms as the Sinfonia and the Gavotte in a mid twentieth century, post war context.
