Topic: Port of Tacoma Pier 4 Reconfiguration Project
Description: As an initial step in constructing the first big ship ready container terminal in the Pacific Northwest, the Port of Tacoma has embarked on a series of wharf upgrade projects at Piers 3 and 4 to accommodate berthing two Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs). An unusual kinked pierhead line configuration, a waterway width restriction, a 64-foot gauge crane rail system, and mooring and berthing components sized for smaller vessels require a structural upgrade of Pier 3 and a complete reconfiguration of Pier 4.
This presentation will focus on the approach taken to upgrade Pier 4 and provides an overview of the project, design criteria, and solutions implemented.
Speakers: Scott Kuebler, PE, SE and Tripp Howard, PE
Mr. Scott Kuebler, P.E., S.E. is a Principal with KPFF Consulting Engineers and has over 19 years of design and project management experience on a wide variety of port-facility structures, ranging from performance-based seismic analysis of new container/break-bulk wharves to the design of upgrades to a 100+ year old historic wharf and warehouse. Scott is a leader of KPFFs waterfront structural engineering group.
Mr. Tripp Howard, P.E. is a Senior Structural Engineer with KPFF Consulting Engineers and has over 18 years of experience in the design and project management of a wide variety of structures built in the marine environment, including condition assessments and retrofit construction of waterfront structures for port facilities.
