Événement

Old Time Stringband Music & Early Country Blues
An evening of Old Time Stringband Music & Early Country Blues with

THE DOWN HILL STRUGGLERS & JOHN COHEN
Jackson Lynch, Eli Smith, Walker Shepard (NA)

and

THE FOUR OCLOCK FLOWERS
Somoa Wilson  & Ernie Vega

Some of  the  best traditional American music, blues, gospel and hillbilly, was recorded on  commercial 78 rpm records during  the 1920s & 30s. The  Down Hill Strugglers and the  Four Oclock Flowers keep that music alive with new interpretations.

THE DOWN HILL STRUGGLERS are:
Walker Shepard - fiddle, banjo, guitar, harmonica, voice
Jackson Lynch - fiddle, banjo, guitar, voice
Eli Smith - banjo, guitar, mandolin, harmonica, Jews harp, pump organ, voice
They are often joined by John Cohen - banjo, guitar, mandolin, voice.

Eli Smith  is a banjo player, writer, researcher and promoter of folk music living in Brooklyn, NY. Eli is a Smithsonian Folkways recording artist, and  producer of the Down Home Radio show.

Jackson Lynch is a multi -instrumented fiddler, who does gigs in Brooklyn NY and New  Orleans La. He repairs acoustic instruments, and bar tends at  Jalopy .

Walker Shepard is currently in California or Kentucky

John Cohen performed  with the  New  Lost City Ramblers for 50 years, as well as with the Putnam String  County Band. He was a founder of the Friends of Old Time Music, & produced /recorded nine albums of field recordings and17  films  about  traditional music. He  is a Professor emeritus in Visual Arts at SUNY Purchase, and  is on the board  of Tompkins Corners  Cultural Center.

The FOUR O'CLOCK FLOWERS (Somoa Wilson & Ernie Vega) are up to their necks in early blues and gospel music. Ernie is a master of many guitar sounds from Leadbelly to Charlie Patton. He performs the nuances that define the style.  Somoa has caught the spirit of early blues singing, and makes the songs as alive now as they were then. Somoa keeps the faith with the down-home gospel of Vera Hall as well as the lowdown blues of Bessie Smith.  The Flowers music offers a pared-down view of the styles still preferred by popular singers today.  Many people have commented on the Flowers  performance at last  years TCCC Harvest Festival, so they are  returning for  an extended  encore.

The Down Hill Strugglers and  the  Four OClock Flowers often perform at  the Jalopy Theater  in Brooklyn, and were  featured at the Folk City  exhibition at the New York Historical Society, to a sold-out, overflow crowd. They will be reunited now at TCCC.

TCCC is located at 729 Peekskill Hollow Road in Putnam Valley, NY. Suggested donation is $15 for tickets that may be purchased in advance at (link to Brown Paper Tickets) or reserved on our website at http://www.tompkinscorners.org/reservations.html or by leaving a message at 845 528-7280.
