Ta'sheeq: poetry in a multi-sensory experience
Selected poems will be read in Arabic and translated into English in a choreographed performance.

Lukman Ahmad is a Kurdish artist from Syria who began his art career in 1986. After moving to the US in 2010, he joined several American art groups. Hailing from one of the largest stateless nations in the world, Ahmads art is inspired by the rich Kurdish legacy of epics and popular stories. He has had more than 45 exhibitions in many countries, including Iraqi Kurdistan, Lebanon, Switzerland, Syria and the United States. His expressive motifs combine authenticity with abstraction and are reflection on Kurdish culture in its vibrant colors.

Akram Alkatreb is a poet, journalist and writer born in Salamiah, an ancient city near Hama, Syria, which is known as the city of poets. He wrote his first poem at 14. He has worked as an art critic and journalist since 1996, writing for major Arabic-language newspapers, including As-Safir, Al-Hayat, Almustaqbal, An-Nahar and Al-Quds al Arabi. He is a leading figure in what critics have called the new wave of Syrian poetry. Alkatreb has been living in the United States since 2001.

Samer Ali is a Syrian musician and violinist who grew up in the coastal city of Jableh. He founded 'Takht Al-Nagham', a traditional Arabic music ensemble based in New York City that encapsulates the original sound from Damascus and reinterprets the melodies with new colors and in varying dimensions. Ahmad also performs with the Alwan Arab Music Ensemble, Orchestra of the Bronx and The National Arab Orchestra.

Hussam Jefee, founder of the Tasheeq project, is a Syrian poet and psychiatrist. His first poetry collection, The Opener of Canned Hope, was published in 2008, and a second collection, Birds Smoking Marijuana, is forthcoming. Jefee has also published translations of American poetry in Arabic literary magazines and journals. He is currently an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts.

Alma Nizam is a Syrian poet born in Paris, France in 1987. Her debut poems appeared in O2 publishing magazine in 2016.

A prolific Syrian poet, Firas Sulaiman has published six volumes of poetry, with a forthcoming collection that is being translated into English. He has also authored a collection of short stories, experimental fiction, a book of aphorisms and contributed to several anthologies. His work has appeared in Banipal, The Wolf, The Manhattan Review, 22 Magazine and Washington Square and has been translated into French, Romanian, Spanish, Swedish and Croatian.

Samantha Kostmayer Sulaiman is a writer, editor and translator.
