Sema - The Sufi Prayer dance of the Mevlevi Whirling Dervishes
Rumi was born in the time of Genghis Khan. He was no stranger to violent times, his family left their home in Afghanistan just ahead of the invasion of Balkh. Growing up on the road in the shadow of his father, a great Islamic Sufi master and scholar, Rumi was exposed to many of the wisest scholars and mystics of his time. Finally settling in central Anatolia (Konya), he went on to become one of the world's finest exemplars of Islam as the Religion of Love, demonstrating through a lifetime of words and actions how Peace is possible on a Path of Love.
On Sunday, September 11, 2016, at 3:30 pm, the Whirling Dervishes of the Mevlevi Order of America (MOA) will present the Sema Ceremony honoring the great Sufi Mystical Poet, Hz. Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi, at the Ballard Odd Fellows Hall.
The afternoon event will feature the prayer dancing of the Whirling Dervishes, a ceremony presented as it has been for over 700 years. In their traditional felt hats and flowing white garments, turners whirl in unison, attuning to the music of the heart.
Students and Seniors (with ID) $10 at the door, remaining General admission tickets $20 at the door (cash only).
"Lovers find secret places inside this violent world where they make transactions with beauty." ~ Mevlana Jelaluddin Rumi
