An Evening with Kashaya and Russian Cultures
On Saturday, June 30 at 6:00pm, Gualala Arts Center will be the location of a special joint effort of the Gualala Arts Culinary Guild, the Kashaya, Fort Ross State Park, and the Russian Council General of San Francisco to raise money to benefit an unprecedented cultural exchange including a visit to the birthplace of the founder of Fort Ross, Ivan Alexandrovich Kuskov, where Russian families will host the Northern California visitors in their homes.
During the evening, a Pomo storyteller will relate oral histories handed down from the time the two cultures first met at Fort Ross. Those attending can bid on local arts and crafts honoring the Kashaya tradition and on a special visit to Fort Ross. Menu will include greeting with traditional Kashaya Tea, Zakuski provided by Russian Embassy, traditional Kashaya tup tup bread, seaweed, pork and many more Kashaya foods, traditional Russian Borscht, homemade churned butter, Russian Tea Cakes will be served along with a no-host bar featuring beer, wine, and vodka.
Gualala Arts Executive Director David "Sus" Susalla says, "I hope the community gets behind this unprecedented reunion of two cultures in the very place where the story began."
On September 6 the delegation will fly from San Francisco to St. Petersburg where they will visit the Kunstkamara Museum of Anthropology and Ethnographic, the oldest museum of its kind founded by Peter the Great. It possesses a superb collection of Kashaya artifacts collected by Ilya Voznesenski in 1841. The Kashaya visitors will assist the museum staff with the provenance of items in the collection.
After four days of seeing the sights of St. Petersburg and attending a special dinner hosted by the American General Council the group will move on to Moscow and then north to Tot'ma, the home and burial site of Kuskov.
Upon returning to Moscow the delegation will be presented to the DUMA, the Russian legislative body, and attend a special reception hosted by Russian historians, many of whom have visited Fort Ross. The night before their Sept. 20 departure the Russian State Department and the American Embassy will co-host a farewell dinner.

A reservation for the fundraising dinner is $25, and can be also be made in person by visiting the Gualala Arts Center.
