Événement

5 by O. Henry Plays
2016 marks the 30th anniversary production of the Greensboro Historical Museum's 5 by O. Henry plays! This year's playbill features The Rathskeller and the Rose, The Fifth Wheel, Conscience in Art, Tobin's Palm and The Memento.

Each story was written by Greensboro's literary son, William Sidney Porter, aka O. Henry, and delightfully adapted for the stage by playwright Joe Hoesl. All feature the smiles and plot surprises that made O. Henry a favorite American writer during his time. As part of the show, O. Henry Singers will perform vintage American tunes and invite the audience to sing along. Each performance lasts about 90 minutes and includes a brief intermission. Be sure to enjoy music that begins about 15 minutes before curtain!

5 by O. Henry has 7:30 pm shows on August 12, 13, 18, 19 and 20, and 3 pm shows on August 14, 20, 21. Tickets are $16 for general admission, $15 for seniors and students, and $13 for museum members. Seating is open, and NC sales tax and Brownpaper ticket fees are additional. (With ongoing downtown construction, be sure to allow plenty of time for parking)

"Though O. Henry wrote his stories more than 100 years ago, his sense of humor, flair for a surprise ending, and ability to make characters come to life make his work as delightful now as it was then," says Carol Ghiorsi Hart, Historical Museum Director. "It's also fun to imagine what O. Henry would think about being remembered so many years later by his hometown folks."

Behind the Scenes, and Creating the Scenery:

Playwright Joe Hoesl has dramatized 80+ O. Henry stories since the series began in 1987, and is its founding writer and director. His other original plays include What's Around the Corner, Through the Shadows, and Sex and Money. Joe is associate producer of the original off-Broadway musical sensation Nunsense.

Artistic Director Barbara Britton is best known for directing 200+ shows as Artistic and Executive Director of City Arts Drama, Livestock Players Musical Theatre and Greensboro Children's Theatre.

Set and Lighting Designer John Saari has a national theatre/video design reputation, having worked with Actor's Theatre of Louisville, The Kennedy Center and Star Touring Productions, among others. John is Master Class Mentor for the Southeast section of the US Institute of Theatre Techology, and head of the Design/Technical Emphasis in Theatre at Greensboro College.

Musical Director Pam Murphy has been singing for the public since the age of eight. As singer, actor and/or musical director, she has worked with community theatre and musical groups including Livestock Players, Community Theatre of Greensboro, and First Presbyterian Church Choir.

Piano accompanist Michael Greene has donned his barroom pianist garb to play for 5 by O. Henry for 18 seasons. A retired English professor, he is the organist at New Garden Friends Meeting and loves playing music from the early 20th century.

Costume Designer Marion Seaman teaches costuming at Greensboro College. She has worked with many local and regional theatre groups, including Kernersville Little Theatre, Salem College Community Theatre of Greensboro and American Singers Opera Project.

This year's company and crew features accomplished actors, talented musicians and light technicians. They include Marilyn Burris, Moses Goldberg, Michael Greene, Stephen Hale, Mickey Hyland, Katie Jo Icenhower, Scott Icenhower, Heather Jaynes, Laura Jenkins, Barb Kilpatrick, Brian Kilpatrick, Emma Kilpatrick, Lee Kirkman,  Mary Mig McEntire, Dale Metz, Mandy Ryan, Alan Tutterow, George Wheeler, Pam Wheeler and Flip Young.
