Explore Race Rock Lighthouse - Boat Trip & Tour Inside
Explore inside one of the region's most fabled lighthouses. For the very first time, you will land by boat at Race Rock Light Station and explore throughout Race Rock Lighthouse.
New London Maritime Society is able to offer these two trips, with a maximum of six passengers, each, thanks to lighthouse experts & the hosts for these tours - Pam Setchell and Nick Korstad.
We meet at the Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, CT. Please arrive 15 minutes ahead of time for orientation.
The two trips take place Saturday, August 26, from 2:30 to 6 PM, and Sunday, August 27, from 8:45 AM to 12 noon. You'll have about one hour out at Race Rock.
Trips are timed to run at slack tide and also are weather-dependent. Be certain to check your email prior to the trip for any last-minute changes or cancellations.
Landing at Race Rock demands some physical dexterity. You don't have to be a Ninja, but you will have to balance on the edge of a boat and climb directly up a ladder to reach the platform.
All passengers are required to wear a life jacket (provided) while in transit, and also must wear appropriate footware: deck shoes or sneakers (no sandals or flip flops).
Please make your reservation at least 6 hours in advance of your trip. Everyone must sign a waiver of liability before boarding.
(If you want to take a chance signing up at the last-minute, please call 203-444-2884.)
For 139 years Race Rock's light has guided mariners through the turbulent waters of the Race in and out of Long Island Sound. First lit in 1878, Race Rock Light was a feat of engineering bravery orchestrated by New London's own Captain T. A Scott.
Race Rock, along with the New London Harbor Light (1760) and Ledge Light (1909) at the mouth of the Thames River, create a pathway of beacons leading to New London. They are a part of the strong, maritime heritage of this New England port.
All three lights are now owned by the New London Maritime Society. All monies raised by NLMS go towards restoration of our local lighthouses.
Our tours leave from downtown NL's Custom House Maritime Museum - just two blocks from the New London Amtrak station - to cruise six miles out past Harbor, Ledge, Avery Point and North Dumpling lighthouses to Race Rock Light at LIS's opening to the Atlantic. Along the way we pass a submarine factory, two forts, a USCG station, & Fishers Island.
~ tour prices $125 adults, $100 NLMS members. Your ticket includes free admission to the Custom House Maritime Museum ($7 value) and a 10% discount in the Museum Shop.
Tickets are non-refundable unless there is a weather cancellation. All tours are weather dependent. Please check your email inbox prior to departing for the dock. We will notify you by email if the tour is canceled.
Food and drink, with the exception of water, is NOT permitted on the boat. For safety reasons, NO alcoholic beverages are permitted.
New London Maritime Society also offers Sunset and Full-Moon Lighthouse Tours on an intimate 6-person boat. Charter tours, too, are available for groups up-to 45.

See you at the Custom House! And thank you for your support of our historic lighthouses.
