The idea of having an extra-marital affair sparks the central action in the comedic play Beside Yourself by Nick Hall, opening on Friday, June 10 at Willits Community Theatre. The family-friendly farce directed by Kevin H. C. More takes place at an annual genetic research convention held at a beach resort hotel. Four pairs of identical twins are in attendance and when one twin decides she feels like having a little fling to improve her marriageand when her scheming husband gets involved, it sets off a hilarious chain reaction of farcical mix-ups.

The confusion becomes delightfully silly when one of each pair of twins pretends to be their identical counterpart. The unpredictable consequences, the fast pacing and a final stunning surprise all contribute to a comic tour de force. Theres plenty of content, not just fluff, Moore explains, and playing multiple characters gives the actors an interesting challenge. Starring in the show are Jess Craighead, Barbaralee Lilker, David Partch, and Jennifer Dellett.

The logical outcomes never quite happen, Moore says, adding that the play becomes a sexual-tension filled, extra-marital romp--without the actors actually taking off their clothes, and for all this sexuality, connections never quite happen. Several short monologues help the actors add depth and insight into their roles and the audience ends up appreciating the unique psychology of each character and the core nature of their relationships.

This production is Moores first time directing at WCT. He brings more than 30 years theater experience to his effort. He has previously appeared in several productions at WCT, as a gifted character actor with a distinctly charming talent for accents. He explains that the farce is drawn from Ancient Roman theatre as well as from the Shakespearean tradition of mistaken identities between twins--in this case all ramped up on modern steroids.

Beside Yourself runs from Friday June 10 through Sunday, June 26 with shows on Thursdays at 7pm, Friday and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sunday matinees at 2pm, with the exception of the closing show at 7pm.

Advance tickets are available in person at Mazahar, 38 S. Main St., Willits; online at brownpapertickets.com; or by phone 24/7 at 1-800-838-3006. Tickets will also available at the door until sold out. The WCT playhouse is located at 37 W. Van Lane (behind Shanachie Pub).
