I Hear America Singing

Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, closes its 35th season with I Hear America Singing, a program of American choral music featuring the world première of Frank J. Oteri's "Counting Time in Central City" which was commissioned especially for the Chorus' anniversary season. The concert* will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m.

America is the great melting pot of the world and that rich and constantly evolving diversity is reflected in its music. For the Chorus' 35th anniversary, the music for this entire season has been inspired by the theme of "Journeys and Tapestries", so it is fitting that the final concert of the season explores the multi-faceted choral music of the United States. This program will highlight a broad survey of American choral traditions from early shape-note pieces from The Sacred Harp and Southern Harmony to the music of William Billings and Samuel Barber, the impact and influence of spirituals, and the contemporary works of composers like Frank Ticheli, Meredith Monk, Stephen Paulus, and Zachary Wadsworth whose music is reshaping and redefining the cultural landscape of American art music. At the heart of the concert is "Counting Time in Central City", a new piece by New York-based composer Frank J. Oteri based on the writings of New York poet Charles Passy and commissioned especially for the Chorus' anniversary.
