FIRST FRIDAY @ GALERIA WEST Music Concert with TITO CASTRO & THOMAS KIRCHMER
The popular once a month FIRST FRIDAY @ GALERIA WEST live concert event at the wonderfully intimate GALERIA WEST Art & Music Gallery in quaint downtown Westfield, NJ continues to bring to you a unique opportunity to enjoy a diversity of music genres as performed by a select series of international artists. Come enjoy the passion and traditions of Tango music with acclaimed Argentine bandoneon player Tito Castro along with bassist Thomas Kirchmer on Friday, July 6, 2012 at 7:00pm at the Galeria West Art & Music Gallery.
Hector "Tito" Castro - Bandoneon player, director, composer and arranger was born in the city of "9 de julio" in the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. At the age of three his family moved to the capital. From a young age Tito was a spectator of the great orchestras, accompanying his parents to the popular dances, and the interest of learning to play the Bandoneon was born. At age 14 he began his music lessons with Master Eladio Blanco, who perfomed with the acclaimed Bandoneon D'Arienzo Orchestra. At 18 years of age Tito started playing with the Orchestra of Osmar Maderna for three years. He continued playing with many orchestras such as; Lucio Demare, Fulvio Salamanca, Hector Varela and Juan Sanchez Gorio.
Her first international tour started in Lima, Peru with the quartet of Josesito Pace in 1964. From there he began to accompany great legends of the Tango; Hugo del Carril and Libertad Lamarque, Alberto Marino, Charlo, Raul Beron, Nelly Vasquez, Alberto Podesta, Juan Carlos Godoy, Roberto Goyeneche.
Tito relocated to New York City in 1998 where he resides to this day. In all this time he has been dedicated to spreading the passion of Tango with performances at theaters, universities, etc. Tito has worked on the movie "Flawless" with Robert de Niro. On two occasions he has had the privilege to accompany the Argentine folklorist Mercedes Sosa at Carnegie Hall. Tito has also accompanied Tenor Placido Domingo at the Washington Opera House and the Metropilitan Opera of NY. In 2005 he accompanied the Great Argentine dancer Julio Bocca & company at the Ballet Theater of NY.  In 2007 -2008 he made his first tour to Japan, Hawaii, Korea with Japanese singer Anna Saeki, performing concerts in Tokyo, Osaka, Yokohama, Fukuoka, Sapporo, Nagoya Blue Note, Theatre Ginza in Tokyo and Tokyo Opera City.
In 2006 Tito recorded his album Memories Of My Bandoneon.
He has also recorded 4 CDs of the "Tangos Pa'Milongueros" series. In late 2009 he recorded his CD "Memories" that includes 6 origianl tangos written by Tito. In the same year he accompanied the German singer Ute Lemper in "Last Tango in Berlin" at the Cafe Carlyle NY, and since then has been doing worldwide  tours of the show at venues such as; the Musik Festspiele and Opera in Dresden, Germany; Vancouver Theatre at the Music Fest, Vancouver, Canada; the Norfolk Norwich Festival in England; the Teatro Verdi in Padova, Italy; the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, Italy; the Teatro Strehler in Milan, Italy; the Teatro Nuovo Giovanni da Udine; the Rheingau Musik Festival in Wiesbanden-Germany; the Teatro Arriaga in Bilbao, Spain;  the Teatro de la Pergola in Firenze, Italy; the Auditorium G. Agnelli Lingotto in Torino, Italy ; the Queensland Performing Arts Center in Melbourne-Australia  and the State Theatre in Sydney, Australia; the Teatro Del Rozzi in Sienna, Italy; the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, England; the Auckland Town Hall in New Zealand and recently at the Teatro Verdi Gorizia in Italy and at the Theatre Des Chanps Elisees in Paris, France. Tito will continue to tour throughout Europe during 2012 and beyond.
Tom Kirchmer began his musical life at 7 years old with the guitar.  At 12 he was playing in a church group and by 14 he was musical director.  He began to study the double bass with a member of the NY Philharmonic and went on to a conservatory degree.  While in college he began playing Jazz gigs and free lancing in the classical field.  After graduation, he took a steady gig with Swing Era veterans at night clubs performing the "American song book".  This work led to the Society field and to Continental repertoire and eventually the Argentine Tango. Of the hundreds of musicians Tom has worked with, many being unknown outside of their circle, there are well known and renowned artists like Ray Charles, Marvin Hamlich, Nancy Wilson, and Cy Coleman. Tom considers some of the best Music performances to be his original hard bop quintet "Silveresque", Greg Bobulinski's 25 years of recording projects, Lew Anderson's and Bill White's big bands and Ray Cohen's elegant performances with strings.  Tom believes when you are a professional bassist, whose specialty is accompanying others, you try to go unnoticed by making the soloist sound good.  The best compliment another musician could give a bassist is: "You seemed to know what I was going to play before I even played it.".
We encourage you to join us often during the year at a First Friday @ Galeria West concert to celebrate the arts in a unique setting. We recommend that you consider enjoying a fine meal before or after the concert at one of many fine restaurants in quaint downtown Westfield and the surrounding area. Most are located within a short walk from the gallery.
Event proceeds benefit theatrical programming efforts at TEATRO Si, a 501(c) 3 New Jersey not for profit corporation.
