JAZZ LATINO @ GALERIA WEST with The BARBARA MARTINEZ QUINTET in Concert
The unique and popular Jazz Latino @ Galeria West monthly music series continues with a special concert event on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 7:30pm at the cozy Galeria West Art & Music Gallery concert venue, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. On the last Friday of each month you are surrounded by inspiring fine art as you enjoy an intimate concert experience with the best of Latin jazz from NYC and beyond. The unique Barbara Martinez Quintet will perform their special jazz fusion sound that has been gaining popular acclaim in NYC and beyond for the past few years. Vocalist and dancer Barbara Martinez will be joined on stage by guitarist Cristian Puig, pianist Gonzalo Grau, bassist Alex Alvear and percussionist Jose Moreno.

Barbara Martinez grew up in New York City singing in opera and musical theater. She was born in Venezuela, to her mother from Argentina. Barbara inherited the love for music, theater and art from her family. Her grandmother (Morenita Rey) and her grandmother's aunt (Libertad Lamarque) made long careers for themselves as singer/actresses in Argentina, and her father is a sculptor in Venezuela.

When Barbara returned to New York after college at Brown U, she fell in love with flamenco. For many years she focused on the dancing (el baile), and studied intensely with New York City pillars like La Conja and La Meira, working and learning on the job at Jorge Navarro's original tablao, Alegrias back when it was on on Bedford Street and 7th. She worked with dance companies like Andrea del Conte Danza Espana. Then she returned to her alma mater, The Met Opera, where she had sung many times as a child, but this time as a gypsy dancer in Carmen and La Traviata.

Barbara began focusing more and more on flamenco singing (el cante), performing and learning with such luminaries as; Alfonso Cid, David Castellanos, Luis Vargas, Aurora Reyes and so many others from Spain. In 2008, she studied cante on scholarship at the Cristina Heeren Foundation in Seville, Spain. In 2010 she was honored to be invited to sing at Carnegie Hall to participate in a series put together by William Maselli, featuring world music singers.

Currently Barbara sings for flamenco dance companies like Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo, Pasion y Arte, A Palo Seco, Sol y Sombra and often with Juanito Pascual in Boston. She also performs as a soloist with acclaimed flamenco and jazz musicians, bringing a lush and eclectic repertoire of flamenco, jazz and Latin, always interspersed with dance. These past few years of performing in well known NYC jazz venues are culminating soon in a recording production that will hopefully do justice to this unique sound.

Also enjoy the current fine art photography exhibition of "Our Great American Wild Spaces" by artist Katina Houvouras at Galeria West Art & Music Gallery on display until May 9th.

We recommend enjoying a fine meal at one of several fine restaurants in quaint downtown Westfield before or after the show. Event proceeds benefit programming efforts at Teatro Si, a 501(c) 3 not for profit organization.
