ByDesign 2016 Series Pass
ByDesign 2016

April 14th - 17th

Our long-running, annual ByDesign program brings together a diversity of people, ideas and creative visions to explore intersections of design and the moving image. ByDesign explores the artists, movements, and modes of thinking that transform our visual culture.

ByDesign 2016 features films that illuminate the roots, currents and future of design in motion. The opening night film is the Seattle premiere of Tom Sachs A Space Program, both a piece of art in its own right and a documentation of sculptor Tom Sachs' incredible piece, Space Program 2.0: MARS, which opened at New York's Park Avenue Armory in 2012. The festival lineup also includes documentaries about metabolist architecture in Japan, the legendary architect Frank Gehrys first building commission in Australia, the stunning array of artist residencies on an island off of Newfoundland.

A Space Program

Seattle premiere!

Apr 14

(Van Neistat & Tom Sachs, United States, 2015, DCP, 72 min)

Tom Sachss A Space Program takes DIY to another level with the meticulous simulation of a NASA mission to Mars. Using found objects and available materials like plywood and Tyvek, the astronauts construct everything from their space suits to the mission control console to the ship itself. Yet alongside the projects earnestness is a charmingly oddball sense of humor.

The Land of Many Places

Seattle premiere!

Apr 15

(Song Ting, Adam James Smith, China, 2015, 61 min)

After vast coal deposits were found in Ordos, China, the region went from being one of the countrys poorest areas to one of the wealthiest. The Chinese government used the money to build a new metropolis, but with no one to populate Ordos City, it soon became known as Chinas largest ghost town. To remedy this, the government is relocating thousands of farmers from rural Ordos to the empty city.

Architect Todd Saunders sculpture-like artist studios perched on the rocky shores of Fogo Island created a buzz among worldwide architecture fans when the first images were released. Beyond Metabolism

Seattle premiere!

Apr 16

(Stefanie Gaus & Volker Sattel, Germany, 2014, 41min)

First triangles, then hexagons  the hexagon as the geometric DNA of an erratic structure with an eerie lack of scale. Slowly, in the succession of hallways, apertures, views, and spaces, an enormous construction is disclosed. Already in its first images, Beyond Metabolism conveys a fascination for a utopia of architecture that imagines life in future societies in flexible, large structures, expandable at will.

Getting Frank Gehry

Seattle premiere!

Apr 17

(Sally Aitken, Australia, 2015, 60 min)
